Castel Capuano, second only to Castel dell’Ovo in terms of antiquity, is one of the five castles of Naples. Its name is due to its proximity to Porta Capuana, one of the gates of the ancient city from which it was possible to head to the city of Capua.

The second oldest of Naples Castles after Castel dell’Ovo, Castel Capuano was named after the nearby Capuana Gate – Porta Capuana. It was built in the mid 12th century by the Norman King William I, the first monarch of the Kingdom of Naples, and it was enlarged by the Angevins. Many kings and queens lived here, including Queen Joanna II. The Parthenopean revolutionaries were also incarcerated here for a time. In the 16th century it became the Palace of Justice and a prison under the reign of the Spanish viceroy Pedro de Toledo. Castel Capuano è, dopo il Castel dell'Ovo, il più antico castello di Napoli. Di origine normanna, è situato allo sbocco dell'attuale via dei Tribunali ed è stato sede della sezione civile e penale del tribunale di Napoli (oggi al Centro direzionale). Deve il suo nome al fatto di essere ubicato a ridosso di Porta Capuana, che si apre sulla strada che conduceva all'antica Capua.
