Palaces

One of the five castles in Naples, the Royal Palace is one of the most imposing landmarks of the city: palace, museum, and historical tourist destination, it incorporates in its structure one of the most importand Opera theathers in the world, Teatro San Carlo. I strongly suggest to visit the royal apartments, with the grand staircase at the entrance and their magnificent decorations of military trophies and allegorical bas-reliefs. Beautifully decorated historical rooms overflowing with art works, statues, tapestries and period furniture. You will immediately mesmerized!

Built on an island connected to the mainland via an artificial isthmus, Castel Dell'Ovo is one of the five castles of Naples. Legend has it that the famous Latin poet Virgil hid an enchanted egg inside the castle. The egg would be inside a glass pitcher full of water protected by an iron cage and hung on a heavy oak beam, then placed in a room in the basements of the castle. The legend tells that, if the egg were to be broken, a terrible curse would be bestowed upon the city of Naples. Up to this moment, no eggs are ever been found, but you are welcome to try! Do not crack it, though (please...).

Another fundamental Neapolitan landmark, Castel Nuovo (also called Maschio Agioino) is a medieval castle and one of the five palaces present in the city of Naples. Its scenic location and imposing size made the castle a perfect royal seat for kings of Naples, Aragon and Spain until 1815. The view from the top of the tower is pretty great, but all the rooms and the chapels of the palace make it, in my opinion, one of the best things to see here in Naples.

Castel Capuano, second only to Castel dell’Ovo in terms of antiquity, is one of the five castles of Naples. Its name is due to its proximity to Porta Capuana, one of the gates of the ancient city from which it was possible to head to the city of Capua.

Perched atop the Vomero hill, the Certosa di San Martino is a former monastery complex, now a museum. Along with Castel Sant'Elmo that stands beside it, this is the most visible landmark of the city, for it commands the gulf with its position. It is just a short funiculare ride away from Via Toledo.

Churches

This is one of the 500 churces of the historical centre of the city, its story is very interesting and the majolica cloister in the monastery complex is truly a thing of beauty.

The peculiar facade hides a very mysterious and esoteric history, and its austere and geometrical look provides the perfect justaposition for its Baroque interiors.

One of the 500 historical churches in Naples. It is located at the precise geographic center of the historic center of the ancient Greek-Roman city, at the intersection of via San Gregorio Armeno and via dei Tribunali.

This one is definitely my favourite, for its ipogeum is perfect if you loke spooky places. Do not forget to rub the metallic skull at the entrance of the building for good luck!

Museums

The National Archeological Museum is very well-furnished. Even though our Greek-Roman section is quite comprehensive, my favourite part is the Egyptian Section, which is located underground an unearthens the deep relationship between Naples and Egypt established at the founding of the city.
