Hoan Kiem Lake (in Nôm: 湖 還 劍 or 還 劍 湖) is also known as Ho Guom Lake (in the Hanoi map of 1886, this lake is called Hoan Kiem Lake - Lac de Hoan Guom), is a freshwater lake. Naturally located in the center of Hanoi city. The lake has an area of about 12 ha [2]. In the past, the lake was also known as Luc Thuy lake (because the water is green all year round), Thuy Quan lake (used to browse marines), Ta Vong and Huu Vong lakes (in the Le Mam period). The name of Hoan Kiem appeared in the early 15th century associated with the legend of King Le Loi returning a precious sword to the Turtle. According to legend, one time when King Le Loi roamed on a boat, suddenly a golden turtle rose to the surface of the water and asked the king to return the sword that Long Vuong lent to repel the invading Ming army. The king then returned the sword to the tortoise and the diving turtle disappeared. From there the lake was named Hoan Kiem Lake. The name of the lake was also given to a central district of Hanoi (Hoan Kiem district) and is the only lake of this district to this day.

The legend of Hoan Khiem Lake Lying in the centre of Hanoi‘s historic district, Hoan Kiem Lake is a lovely, peaceful place with a fascinating history. In 1428, legend has it that Emperor Le Loi obtained a magical sword from the Dragon King to fight against Chinese oppressors. The sword, as you may have guessed, came from Hoan Kiem lake. After the successful battle against the Chinese invaders, Emperor Le Loi visited the beautiful lake. He was boating through the still waters when an enormous golden turtle surfaced. The turtle explained that he was sent by his master, the Dragon King, to retrieve the sword from Le Loi. Loi returned the sword to the turtle, who swam back beneath the jade waters. Loi then named the area Hoan Kiem lake, meaning “Lake of the Returned Sword” to commemorate the spectacular event.
