Smith Mountain Dam & the Smith Mountain Project which includes Smith Mountain Lake and Leesville Lake are unique. The lakes are operated in tandem for hydroelectric power generation. The project is unique because power is generated by Smith Mountain Dam during high demand periods and water is pumped back from Leesville Lake back UP into Smith Mountain Lake during low demand periods. Located 6.1 miles or 25 minutes.
