Mauna Kea beach is a family friendly beach with white soft sand that slopes gently into the water and the palm trees along the fringe to provide shade. The beach fronts the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, has good access to facilities and is great for sunbathing. During the calm summer months, this is also a good beach to go snorkeling. Kaunaʻoa Beach itself is – like all beaches here – public access, but the parking lot belongs to the Mauna Kea beach Hotel. The hotel has parking space for visitors that are not staying in the hotel, but these are limited (40) and fill up quickly. If you want to go to Kaunaʻoa Beach, get there early to get one of the 40 public parking spaces.

My favourite beach on the island. Go early to snag one of the coveted beach parking passes, or grab a reservation at the Beach Tree or Copper Bar restaurants to gain access. Gorgeous hotel with a public beach at the far end. Beautiful white sand and gentle waves.

Ranked as one of the world's best beaches, Mauna Kea never disappoints, with pristine water, soft white sand, and a beachfront bar and restaurant that you do not have to be a hotel guest to enjoy. Insiders Tip - Order a Tropical Itch at the bar - it's no longer on the menu but they've been serving it up for 50 years! Extra Insiders Tip - If they say they are "Out of Beach Passes" ask them if you can valet instead. As long as you order food or a drink at the restaurant, they will reduce the valet fee from $40 to $20. Verify this day of just in case the policy has changed.
