Tucked below the Acropolis, this theatre was a very important venue during the ancient Dionysiac festival – a riot of wine and debauchery. It is usually also blissfully uncrowded in comparison with the big rock above! Look for the pee holes in the posh front seats! You can climb down to the theater from the back of the Acropolis, so you don't need to backtrack. Entry is included in the Acropolis ticket.

Enter the archaeological area on the southern slope of the Acropolis (entrance at Dionyssiou Areopagitou Str), and head upwards. On the slope to your right is the most ancient theatre of the world, the Theatre of Dionysos. In this theatre, the most famous ancient Greek poets, Aeschylus, Aristophanes, Euripides, and Sophocles saw premiere performances of their plays in the 5th century BC.

The view of the Theater of Dionysus from the Acropolis is very nice, you can see it in a high angle. Have a break in here and enjoy this view!
