Bentota is home to a number of historic temples, most significantly the Galapatha Raja Maha Viharaya. An ancient dagoba at the temple is believed to house the tooth relic of Anubuddha Maha Kassyapa Arahat – one of the key disciples of Lord Buddha. This has made the temple a revered place of worship for the Buddhist community. The temple hosts a grand annual parade in August, which attracts many tourists.

A few kilometres inland on the south bank of the Bentota Ganga is the Galapata Temple, which is said to date from the 12th century. To reach it, cross the bridge and take the side road to your left after 500m.
