A hundred years ago this month, October 30, 1921, to be exact, is when a group of local Phoenix residents came together with the then Phoenix Mayor Willis Plunkett to lay the cornerstone for the first synagogue in the Phoenix area, Congregation Beth Israel, according to the Arizona Jewish Historical Society.
