“This scale model of Havana is the third largest scale model in the world. It was built at a scale of 1:1000 and spans over 144 square meters. It is approximately 22 meters long and 10 meters wide and weighs six tons. A team of nine designers, model makers and architects led by Orlando Martorell worked for eleven years to build a detailed model of the Cuban capital mostly out of Habano cigar boxes, cardboard, sponge, plastic and sand. In order to give the visitor an idea of the constructive evolution of the city, the buildings are displayed through the use of different colors–brown for the colonial period, i.e. until 1898; ochre for the Republican period, from 1902 - 1959; 1959 - present days”
“The Acuario Nacional de Cuba opened on January 23, 1960, with just 13 fish tanks in place, but it gave visitors the opportunity to see several fish and sea invertebrate creatures. The number of tanks increased, giving room to new species until 1973, a year that was marked by the arrival of Silvia, a seal that became the most popular creature among visitors. Later, in the 80s, a show was introduced with two dolphins, Diana and Ciclón.”
“Opened in 1953, this is Cuba’s second largest church, which is visible for several blocks due to its vast dome built in Roman-Byzantine style. The Jesús de Miramar church boasts 14 large mural paintings by Cesareo Marciano Hombrados y de Onativia. In one station, the artist portrayed himself as one of the executioners disrobing Jesus; and in another he used his wife, Sara Margarita Fernández, as the model for Virgin Mary. Curiously enough, most of the people who paid for these murals were included in the crowd scenes. In the garden there is a 1.8-meter-tall sculpture made of Carrara marble, a copy of the Virgin of Our Lady of Lourdes.”
“The shops attached to the Hotel Comodoro offer all the expected essentials, and some unexpected great prices on clothing too.”
