Food Scene

They add some nice twists on classic, ethnic, and local flavors. The sweet potato fries with maple aoli are definitely worth indulging in. Ambiance is nice, and the feel can range from casual to formal depending on time of day.

I'm not a coffee drinker, but I have a few friends who are absolutely coffee snobs. This is a local place that makes a (reportedly) great cup of java, and also has some solid character. If you order the hot tea, you'll get it on a tray with a timer to help you steep it perfectly.

Again, I have to confess that I don't drink coffee, but I'm getting pretty good at identifying a good cup by smell. Sunergos is the cream of the local crop. At some locations, they even have their own roasters on site. They're choosy about their beans, and they like to explore new locations and flavors. They're also one of the best places around for having their brewing science down! If you were wondering, their coffee smells delicious.

Imagine what would happen if a entrepreneuring restaurateur decided to go explore a foreign country to learn the culture, flavors, and recipes, and then bring them back to use to launch a restaurant. This is what happens when Ole Restaurant Group opens up a new place. El Taco Luchador may look like a hole-in-the-wall and seat a maximum of 20 people, but it's one of the cities food treasures. Snag a few ala cart tacos and the mole fries, and you'll be on your way to a small slice of food euphoria.

Nashville Hot Chicken has been creeping its way north. Now, we've got a few great hot chicken joints in Louisville. Royals is one of the best! Choose your heat level, grab a few southern sides, and prepare to enjoy a little South by Midwest. If you've got a few minutes, hop into their large outdoor seating area and try your hand at the simple, but strangely addicting, ring and hook game.

In the mood for a soup and sandwich? Forget Panera or McAlisters! Head on over to this hidden gem in Lyndon. You can grab a Jimmy Hendrix or a Monet (sandwiches) and have a delicious lunch for well under $10. Blink and you'll miss it. You'll be underwhelmed by the location, but your stomach will thank you. Oh, but it's one of the few remaining cash-only places, so be sure to stop by an ATM if you're used to paying with cards.

Darnell Ferguson, restaurant owner, got his nickname of Super Chef while whipping up culinary wonders at the '08 Olympics in Beijing at the age of 21. His story could easily be a Phenix-rising-from-the-ashes movie, and he's got more grit than almost anyone I know. He also knows his food. For breakfast or brunch, this place serves up classic foods in new ways. Everything is a treat. Ever had a breakfast sandwich using green waffles instead of a biscuit? Then you've got to try the HULK. Red pepper grits, candied bacon, and the thickest pancakes on the planet are just a few of the culinary treats that dot this menu. Rumor has it they're open for dinner now on certain nights of the week.

Ask 10 people in Louisville for their favorite local pizza joint, and you'll get 7 different answers. Impellizeri's, Wicks, Bonnie & Clyde's, and others will bubble to the top. I disagree. Clifton's has the best pizza in the city. They make it in a brick oven, and I've never gotten a pie in less than 45 minutes. But it doesn't matter because it's totally worth it! The crust is perfect. The cheese is thick and stringy. They're generous with their toppings, and it tastes great. Calzones are about the size of a small pizza folded in half, and come with potato chips. Weird, but it somehow works. This place is a dive, but if you can get past the facade, you'll get a great meal.

Parks & Nature

If you want to kick a ball, throw a frisbee, ride a bike, or just go for a walk, this is your ideal spot. Part of miles and miles of networked parks, Beckley Creek Park is a great mix of nature and constructed venues. Concrete and dirt trails, grass and flowering fields, pavilions and playgrounds are all part of the charm and appeal of this area. Burn off a few calories or soak in a sunset here, and you'll have a morning, afternoon, or evening well-spent.

Every year in early May, all eyes are on the Kentucky Derby . . . for an afternoon. Careers are fortunes are made and destroyed as a result of this race, and Churchill Downs is where it all happens. Whether driving by to catch a glimpse of the twin spires, stopping in to place a bet, or visiting the museum to catch a whiff of the unbridled spirit of Kentucky, Churchill downs is a must-see stop of your travels in Louisville.
