Neighborhoods

London Lane is a quiet, friendly mountain community a 15 minute drive from the heart of Conifer. In warm weather, folks are often out walking their dogs in the sunshine along the well-maintained dirt roads. In cold weather, we tend to tuck in with warm fires under a blanket of ever-present snow. Inclement weather can be challenging, but a prepared driver with a 4 wheel drive vehicle or chains should have nothing to fear.

Sightseeing

Our treehouse property abuts the Maxwell Falls Upper Trailhead. It provides stunning views, a moderately challenging short hike at altitude that rewards the diligent with a picturesque waterfall that is most impressive in April and May. Even if the falls are dry (which they can be in July and August), the views make this special trip worth it.

Only open in late May through early October, Mount Evans is a must for those staying more than a couple of days. Definitely a "pack a lunch" situation, the drive is beautiful, particularly in early fall, and presents many opportunities to view wildlife (bighorn sheep and mountain goats in particular), impressive peaks, an observatory, and the occasional test car being put through its paces at altitude. Fair warning, please check with the US Forestry Service ahead of time on its status. Weather is unpredictable and can dump several feet of snow on the mountain without notice, rendering the roads impassible.

Whether it's ice-skating and ice fishing (bring your license!) in the winter or paddle-boarding and a comfortable hike near a beautiful small town in the summer, this is a great place to spend and afternoon and acclimate to the altitude. It's also easily within walking distance of historic downtown which can wrap up a full day with only 15 minutes of driving.

In an effort to make room for more open meadow, Flying J is not actually that great for hiking. That said, it is *fantastic* trail biking territory. See majesty all around you while you push through easy-to-medium difficulty biking.

Red Rocks is internationally known for the natural amphitheater, shocking view, and undefinable ambiance that make it a fixture in the music scene. What I suggest is visiting on a sunny day where there isn’t a concert scheduled for a few hours. The trails are enriching to the soul with wind-carved red sandstone megaliths roaring out of the ground. Bring sunscreen and a water bottle!

City/town information

There are, admittedly, not a lot of places in the Front Range that are "walkable" without hiking boots. Evergreen presents the classic vision of an idyllic mountain town in a way that can be traversed by people who aren't super-human and maintain charm. Small shops and places to eat abound next to local watering holes, kids playing in Bear Creek and a laundromat. Definitely a town to put on your "to visit" list.

The Front Range is famous for the little mountain towns that seem to emerge magically from the rocks and forests. Many end up commercialized and overrun, but, if you’re careful, you can sneak around the crowds and get that sleepy mountain feel. If you can get to Morrison on a weekday morning, it is such a place. Plenty of kitschy shopping opportunities, tasty spots to eat, Red Rocks in walking distance from town, and eminently walkable, it’s worth a visit. Fair warning; visit the Red Rocks website in advance. If there is an event that day, even hours from opening, the town turns into a zoo. I have literally been stuck for an hour or more. Plan your trip carefully.

Food scene

Good BBQ is difficult to get anywhere, but you are lucky to be near one of the better joints we've ever been to. The food is reasonably priced, the sides are thoughtfully executed, and the drink menu is surprisingly well-rounded. The restaurant was built for grab-and-go, but there is outdoor seating as well. The key is to get there early; the ownership only smokes a certain amount of meat per day and, once it's gone, it's gone. There is often a line for lunchtime so that folks can get exactly what they want. Once you eat here, you'll understand what they're in a hurry to get.

Do you like good beer? Great sandwiches? An awesome view? This place is for you. One of our favorite places to go for and afternoon. Dog friendly.

The food here isn’t going to shatter your concept of reality and the live music tends to be quite loud, but that is not why you go to Snowpack. Snowpack has a fantastic beer selection and a small attached bottle shop in the back for some of the most eclectic beer you can find. The prices for even the hardest-to-find brews are reasonable and it’s got a wonderful atmosphere. Kid friendly.

If you are looking for a quiet mountain tap-room with decent bar food and a rustic atmosphere, look no further! Always something new on their beer list, friendly service, and the menu is pretty generally great!

There aren’t that many places that serve decent breakfast out here, but the Conifer Cafe is a great spot to stop. Service can be a little slow, but the food is great and portions are HUGE! Lovely spot to stop and plan the day, but get there early, because it fills fast!
