My happy food and drink places

I like food that's made with heart and that isn't snooty or pretentious either. So whether it's cheesy chips and a pint or good quality, locally produced food, I have some recommendations for you.
Quality, locally sourced food served in a contemporary setting. Very reasonably priced. Excellent coffee. Extremely popular In the summer, but definitely worth a visit. Close to St Agnes.

Good, old fashioned local pub. Less than a five minute walk away. Good honest pub food. Cosy interior and plenty of outside seating including a pretty tiered area. A decent range of St Austell beer and Old Rosie's Cider (my particular favourite).

A great place to get a fabulous, reasonably priced lunch that is made with love and uses local produce if possible. Excellent coffee. Airy and modern interior plus outdoor seating arranged like a mini coliseum. You walk past apple trees and banks of wild flowers to get there as it's part of a community orchard.

In the heart of Newquay, a great little shop to pick up healthy treats. They also make delicious wholesome lunches and serve great coffee. They have a cute courtyard if you want to stay and have your food/drink there and they also provide take aways. The staff are super friendly and helpful.

A great little chippy. Our go to place if we're in Newquay and in the mood for eating fish and chips and sitting on a bench overlooking the sea...or even in the car on a rainy evening.

A lovely, friendly chippy that does gluten free. We love to drive into Perranporth, walk along the long, sandy beach, maybe look at the shops and buy some lovely fish and chips from Brown's and then take them to the beach with a can of pop or a bottle of beer bought from the co-op over the road. Happy days.

Another local eatery open in the summer months that does great stone baked pizzas and good coffees. They have a cosy courtyard if you want to eat there or you can take them away and eat them on the beach or dunes and watch the sun go down.

This place is very "upmarket". I mention it as I went there for a birthday treat and it was an absolute super foodie/fine dining experience. Their food is locally sourced and they have their own vegetable gardens there. There's also a cafe there selling very reasonably priced lunches and food coffee. It's all on the grounds of a wooded estate. It's very pretty there with a cobbled courtyard and the cafe and restaurant are repurposed farm buildings. They make amazing sprouted seed sourdough bread and cultivated butter. Wonderful. If you're there during the day you can visit Helford as part of your day out.

My partner Paul recommends a visit to this place for its dressed crab. It sits atop the Newquay side of the Gannel. There's some more information on their website, mentioning gorgeous views over the Gannel.

Sightseeing

Pretty walks along the Gannel at low tide. Very atmospheric, imagining all the old fishing boats and the fishermen who used to make a living there. Look out for egrets and cormorants. A little boat will take you over the Gannel for the cost of a few pounds or, at low tide, there is a little foot bridge you can walk over and potentially walk into Newquay or atleast stop for a crab sandwich at the Fern Pit. I've never been there but my partner recommends it! There's also a dinky little shop almost in the rocks, just after the footbridge, that sells ice cream and buckets and spades etc. There are also walks above the Gannel, if the tide is up, through hedgerows and fields that brings you back to Crantock beach.

A smaller beach than Crantock. About a 30 minute pleasant walk away, with a farm shop cafe en route. Alternatively, there is a national trust carpark not too far from the beach. Poly Joke beach has a stream running through down to the sea. Little nooks to sit and caves to explore. Family friendly. I would recommend getting there early to get a good pitch, though it never gets too busy there. Fabulous, beautiful, scenic cliff top walks either to Crantock, taking a look at the poppy fields and with a potential stop at the Bowgie Inn for refreshment. The other direction leads to Holywell beach. Next to Poly Joke beach, if you go towards Holywell - on the cliff top walk - you can peer down and maybe see some seals, although they're usually more around in the winter months. It's a pretty walk anyway, one of my favourites.

Holywell is a beautiful, long and golden sandy beach with beautiful views of the two rocks (almost islands) known as Gull Rocks. Holywell has a famous Holy well (!) in a cave that you can access at low tide. It's really worth a look, if you're prepared to clamber up the rocks a little. Shiny, red striped and stepped cave sides and a spring. Quite beautiful and unusual. If you like to walk, it is possible to get to Holywell from here on foot along the coastal path. Otherwise, there is national trust carpark.

If you park up here, you can do an awesome cliff top walk to Porthcothan beach. Along the cliff top you will see beautiful craggy rocks and caves. You will also walk across a quiet gravelly bay with a stream with rock pools and stunning cliffs. There's also a beautiful sea pool where swimmers take to the waves. Finally, if you follow the path up the side of the beach you will come to Porthcothan Bay Stores where you can pick up a delicious Ice cream. My favourite is a malted milk with crushed up maltesers. Well deserved after a good walk. They also provide coffee, bottled beers and and a range is snacks. Pretty beach too.

A pretty, well established traditional Japanese garden. Beautiful overhanging trees and walkways. Large ponds with beautiful coy carp bobbing about in the dark green water. A Zen gravel garden. Very peaceful, though it does get popular. Book tickets in advance. Dogs not allowed. It's close to the unexpectedly lovely village of St Mawgan, which I only discovered last year. There is a gorgeous walk through the Estate owned woods. Apparently they used to be walked by the nuns that lived at the local convent. Lots of pretty cottages in the village, a gift shop, and pub. And a wonderful old church yard to explore.

Penzance is a great place to wander around. Lots of quirky/contemporary craft and vintage shops. Interesting art galleries. Good coffee places and cafés. You could spend a whole day here. I can recommend my favourite streets and shops. If you have transport, or if you're intrepid walkers, you can walk along the coast, past the Lido towards Newlyn and Mousehole.

A famous tiny island, known for its gardens and stunning castle. Marazion, which is the close by village on the mainland has interesting arts and craft shops and places to eat and drink. If you look online, you will find booking and timing information for the island and also some of the history of the place. Not too far from Penzance.

You can drive to the Ferryboat inn and get the ferry across to Helford Village. There are pretty walks and beautiful views of the river. You can even walk to Frenchman's Creek, made famous by Daphne du Marrier. I recommend looking at a good blog I've just come across called cornishbirdblog that does a really good description of this area, the ferry and good walks.
