Just a 15-30 min walk from the cottage. Former property of the Fort used initially in the Spanish American war but most important in WWII as the Japanese code was broken in a building just below the cottage location. On clear days you will have amazing views to the Olympic Mountains and possibly Mount Ranier on your way to and from.
The fence you drive along to get to the cottage is the Eastern border of the fort. You are driving on the sentry's perimeter jeep track!

Ferry has been historically reliable
The pandemic has strained the ferry staffing and they are less reliable than prepandemic. You can check the ferry website or download the handy "NW Ferry" app to get service updates, see the boats real time position and live shots of the ferry loading areas. Note that boats typically "overload" westbound on Friday afternoons and Eastbound on Sundays or holiday Mondays. The island can also be reached by "driving around" (about 2 hrs plus from Seattle depending on traffic) or by the Edmonds Kingston Ferry (or Ferries that land in Port Townsend or Port Angeles from Whidbey Is or Victoria BC)

Always bring rain gear and shoes that can get muddy! Slippers or socks for the cottage are handy but the floors are heated in winter!

Mountain Bikes
There are networks of trails that are great for single track style mountain biking avoiding roads much of the time. Rental is available in Winslow (about 5 road miles from the cottage).

Road Courtesy
This is essential, especially on the single lane road to our home. Please drive slowly (15 MPH max) on our road and turn out/giveway if you are closest to a turnout. Watch out for walkers, bikers, pets, owls, deer and coyotes. Obeying the speed limit on the island is also a good idea as the police to car ratio may be higher than you are used to and they WILL ticket speeders.

You might consider reading this historical novel, very closely based on Bainbridge Island's WWII era history and actual historical figures. There's a copy to read in the cottage! (take it with you if you like- just leave a donation for the Japanese American Exclusion Memorial)

Deer
Bainbridge Island has more deer than you might expect due to a lack of predators. This leads to many unfortunate meetings between vehicles and deer. Please watch out for them especially at dawn, dusk and at night when they are hard to see. Another reason to drive the speed limit!

Bainbridge without a car
Occasionally guests ask if they can plan a visit without a vehicle. It has been done! But it requires some planning. There is a taxi and occasionally Uber to take you from town to us and then back (probably $40+ each way). You would want to shop at Town and Country first (walkable from the ferry). limited Local car rental is available at Modern Collision (weekday pickup/dropoff). Unfortunately we are not in the "home area" for the new BI Ride service.
