Best to go as part of a sailing tour, this canal was used by the pirates to access the lagoon and attack the town.

San Felipe fort is an important part of Bacalar's history; it was built to defend the town against pirates.
Inside there is an interesting museum with the history of Bacalar, and amazing views of the lagoon from the exterior walls.
