Neighborhoods

Neighborhoods that pack a punch and deliver a lot in their limited geography.
"I feel like I am on vacation." That was my comment to my husband the first time I visited West Seattle, a short drive from downtown Seattle and the stadiums. The vibe here is beach casual and mellow. When the weather heats up to 70+, Seattleites don their bikinis and shorts and head to Alki Beach in West Seattle. It features volleyball nets, cute cafes and a sandy shore. Looking across the water, you'll see Bainbridge Island and the Olympic Mountains. Alki is a great place to rent bikes or skates and spend an afternoon. There is a water taxi that will take you across the Sound to downtown Seattle. If you want a postcard-worthy shot of your trip to Seattle, just follow the bike path or road east toward downtown. You'll know when to stop. The view is stunning! West Seattle has a flourishing downtown (called "the Junction") with several good restaurants. Itto's Tapas (Moroccan/Spanish), Mashiko (Japanese/sushi) and Flying Apron Bakery (vegan) are wonderful choices. For breakfast, get great smoothies and healthy omelettes at Cafe Mia. Afternoon juices and healthy bowls can be found at Heart Beat. West Seattle's farmer's market is Seattle's second largest (Ballard's is the largest) and it is well worth checking out on Sundays. The crown jewel of West Seattle is Lincoln Park. Just a few blocks from Woodside Suite, the park rests on Puget Sound and boasts fabulous views of the Olympics, several islands and the Vashon Ferry dock. Home to resident eagles, owls, rabbits and other wildlife, it's a treat to wander through the woodlands or take a jog along the waterfront. Woodside Suite is in West Seattle—it's our favorite neighborhood!

There are as many sides to Capitol Hill as there are the types of coffee in this caffeinated city. The top of the Hill houses the historic and hauntingly beautiful Volunteer Park, designed by the famed Olmsted brothers. The park houses a beautiful conservatory and the Seattle Asian Art Museum. There's also the iconic "Black Sun" sculpture by Isamu Noguchi that you can climb into or take pictures of the Space Needle through. There are good views of the Space Needle from the top of the park. As you drive down the neighborhood you pass numerous beautifully restored historic homes. An afternoon spent wandering this neighborhood and the park would not be wasted! Capitol Hill is also the home of wonderful restaurants. Ramen Danbo, Cascina Spinasse and Terra Plata, just to name a few. Also check out the Starbucks Reserve Roastery and Tasting Room; don't bother with the original Starbucks at Pike Place Market. And if you have a vegan friend with you, take them to Frankie and Jo's and they will love you forever for it! Capitol Hill boasts a music scene. My sister and her partner fly down from Anchorage just to see bands play in "Cap Hill"—as locals call it.

Wonderful restaurants include Walrus and the Carpenter and Staple and Fancy. Cozy coffee and tea shops such as Miro Tea with a dizzying assortment of teas. And incredible vintage shops all housed in historic buildings. Oh, and don't forget to have an ice cream at famed Salt and Straw—they have vegan flavors too! It's a wonderful neighborhood to wander. Great to tie this in with a visit to the Nordic Museum and/or the Ballard Locks and/or Golden Gardens Park—see those entries. And if you like farmer's markets, Ballard has the largest in Seattle every Sunday from 10am to 3pm.
