My mother insists that we eat here every time she visits. This particular restaurant has a sit-down option and walk-up window. (We recommend the walk-up window for lunch.) They make outstanding fish and chips. We also recommend the New Jersey chowder (a mix of the New England and New York chowders). This is also where a good part of the Pacific fishing fleet docks, so fans of "The Most Dangerous Catch" may see some of their favorite boats.

Slate Coffee Roasters is one of the companies really raising the bar on coffee culture around here. It's out of the way. But is the best $5 cup of coffee you'll ever have. Leave the cream and sugar alone and ask the barista for a recommendation.

Shopping

Old Ballard Avenue is actually a recent development in Seattle. This once quiet neighborhood has become THE place to catch a show (The Tractor Tavern), do some shopping, or find a great meal (The Walrus & The Carpenter, Bastile, Carta Oaxaca, 8oz Burger Company), a fancy cocktail, or a not-so-fancy beverage.
