Great 'vilt' buffet lunch, interesting architecture & wildlife park

A lovely 3-4 km walk (1hr if taking it easy) through the forest from Jullekulla (ask Joe OR use a combo of GPS & savvy), is Öster Malma, a historic castle, hotel, restaurant & wildlife park. It's the HQ of the region's hunting & the restaurant (check web first for opening times, especially during COVID) serves locally caught game (wild boar, deer, elk, mouflon), salads & vegetable dishes in a buffet style LUNCH ONLY. Very good value at around 150sek per person and plenty to keep a vegetarian happy (probably not a Vegan). If you didn't manage to see any of the area's many animals in the wild, there's a wildlife park here with all the locals in fairly large, humane paddocks.

Walk, picnic, swim

A beautiful nature reserve with a shortish (2-3km) 'runda' (circular walk) with ancient oak clusters & magnificent views & swimming opportunities on 'Båven' (a large, un-spoiled lake dotted with islands & possibilities for adventure).

Another nearby nature reserve on 'Likstammen' with a lovely walk through a spooky forest, up to the ancient remains of a small settlement on top of the cliffs (great view, 'The Viking Cathedral' we call it & imagine viking longboats rolling out of the fog), OR a fun creep along the bottom of the cliffs for braver kids/adults), down the other side, through wilder forest, eventually coming to the 'näs' or nose that sticks out into Likstammen lake & offers more wonderful views & picnic/swimming opportunities. The walking is probably a bit much for smaller kids unless they're used to it.....DEFINITELY BRING SNACKS/PICNIC & WATER (we drink from the lake, Likstammen is the cleanest in the region with no agriculture, 'summer villages' of second homes or public bathing places, pristine Södermanland paradise! See if you can spot the cave/overhang amongst the boulders a short way after the cliffs, a good spot to take shelter if it rains/snows!

Etapp means 'section' & there are other better sections than this (nothing else came up in the search!)... Stage 16 up around Skottvångs Gruva (a disused copper mine, now a restaurant with a good buffet lunch & tourist attraction) is where Sweden's crown princess Madeleine was taken walking when on her tour of every region in Sweden. It can be quite busy on warmer days or holidays as there are lots of 'beaches' and grill spots with provided wood... A more exciting walk with kids as there is ice cream at start & finish, fun places to throw stones in the water or clamber on wind-fallen trees, watch canoeists pass by & bring something good (& a lighter, knife & paper!) to grill when there isn't an 'eld forbud' (forbidden to make fire) as there often is in July/August......check www.gnesta.se for fire status. www.sormlandsleden.se will give you some info in Swedish & English but to see the maps properly, you will have to login with my details...

Renting bikes/canoes

The lake at the bottom of the garden, 'DALSJÖ' runs into the larger 'LIKSTAMMEN' and we have a canoe parked there. A wonderful way to explore the countryside, picnic on islands or travel by water to Öster Malma for lunch, the canoe can be hired for 200sek/half day or 350/full day (with discounts for longer periods) with paddles & lifejackets. A canadian has 2 seats, perfect for a couple but can also take 2 younger children on the floor. Bicycles - A collection of un-geared bikes for 8 yrs old & up at 100sek/day....more explore!
