Waipa is upholding the Hawaiian tradition and land reclamation. They are a non-profit and are involved in education and farming. They make 'poi' every Thur, and you could go help

Learn how to make kalo, volunteer to learn our way of life or simply go to ask questions. Waipa is a well known foundation and one of the hearts of kauai. You can volunteer to help pull kalo and actually go through the process of making our most common staple of food, poi. This is the best place to learn about culture and live it.

The foundation is an incredible place to learn about local plants and farming. There is a farmers market on Tuesday afternoon, but also a fridge with the best local cheesecake open for pick-up daily.

Every Thursday local and visitor volunteers make poi from locally grown kalo (taro). It's a great way to learn some local stuff as you sit around and "talk story". You can stop by for a short time or stay all morning. Wear clothes that can get wet and a little dirty. Long hair must be tied back. It's one of my favorite activities!
