Located about a 30 minute drive from Berkeley Springs, the Paw Paw tunnel is part of the C&O canal. Built in the mid 1800’s, the tunnel stretches over 3,000 feet.

Bring a flashlight! This is a 20 minute walk in a tunnel. The Paw Paw Tunnel near Oldtown, Maryland is one of the most notable features on the C&O Canal. The Tunnel itself is an incredible feat of engineering, and its construction alone has a colorful history. It has been featured in many photographs, and it is a Canal Discovery.

Wonderful historic point of interest. Very nice easy hike. Remember to bring a flashlight! It gets dark in the tunnel!

Paw Paw Tunnel (15 minutes) - 300 meters long (enough to feel the temperature drop and it to be very dark) on the C&O canal connecting Washington, DC to Cumberland Maryland and Pittsburgh, PA.
