Isola di San Michele
“The Cemetery island” Originally populated only by monks, this small island to the east of Venice is renowned as the most peaceful in the Lagoon… And not surprisingly, since the entire area of San Michele was decreed a cemetery and used as such since the 1836, when the Venetian government decided…
Venetian lagoon is full of little islands and since the early 19th century Venetians decided to use one of them as cemetery. The island is entirely dedicated to churches and many, elegant ranks of marble tombs.
It is the cemetery island but I find it a very suggestive place to visit with a lot of famous people buried here (among them Josif Brodskij, Emilio Vedova, Igor' Stravinskij, Ezra Pound).
