Olana State Historic Site
The painstakingly preserved former home of Frederic Edwin Church is now a museum hung with his paintings and those of his contemporaries from the Hudson River School, the romantic 19th-century movement. The exterior is thematically Middle Eastern, and the mixed motifs of the rooms inside reflect Church’s extensive world travels. Tours are offered at specific times, but you can also tour the expansive hilltop grounds yourself—check out the mobile self-guided tour you can download online.
Large estate with miles of walking trails, picnic tables, and a historic home/museum. Free entry to the property, book ahead for a house tour.
Walk the grounds and the property hiking trails for free from sun up to sun down. Best view of the Hudson River and Valley! One of our favorite places to see the sun set. Tours of Frederick Church's historic home are $12 and sell out well in advance.
The tour in the mansion gives historic details but we favor the grounds at Olana. Perfect for a long woodsy walk or hilly run or simply taking in the instillation art found throughout the land.

“The home of Frederick Edwin Church, key figure in the Hudson River School of painting. Stunning setting and a significant example of neo-moorish architecture. Really worth a visit! ”
“Only open weekends! This is our favorite brunch spot. A real farm meal on a real farm. Great food, fresh ingredients, beautiful setting/view and an awesome farm store (meat and dairy).”
“Olana State Historic Site is a quick visit for the art and architecture buffs. The view is well worth it because it's perched on a ridge overlooking the entire valley. It was home to Frederic Church who was a pioneer in the Hudson River School art movement (mid 19th century). His art and his peers brought a lot of public awareness about the Hudson Valley. If you're not an art buff trust me Freddy Church and his style is a BIG DEAL. His work is in every major museum in the world, taught in every art class, and we're talking tens of millions of $$$ at auction. You'll get some major credibility with your art friends if you post an instagram photo while there :) ”
