"It seems that Michelangelo was so astonished by the east doors of the Baptistery that he considered them "doors of Paradise", an alternative name of them". Tom O'Neill (author of National Geographic). Book up your visit on the web-site www.duomo.firenze.it ; you can choose to visit the Cathedral or the Museum and the baptistery, the dome or the terraces of the Cathedral. With new rules it is necessary to book up the visit to avoid crowding. The baptistery is probably the anciest building of Florence. The interior with the octagonal plant is enriched with mosaics of the late thirteen century. The three bronze doors are very famous. Before it a was a roman temple, dedicated to Mars, builded to celebrate the victory against the Etruscans. The origins of it are still uncertain. The external decorations (except the doors) were made in twelfth or thirteen century. The south doors were realized by Andrea Pisano (1290-1348), they were put up in 1336 on the main entrance of the baptistery. In 1452 they were removed in the current position to make place to the east doors realized by Lorenzo Ghiberti. In the superior panels are sculpted life events of S. Giovanni Battista. The inferior panels represent Humility and the cardinal virtues. If you continue the circular route you will see the San Zenobi column (1384). Here a miracle supposed to happen when the coffin of the first bishop of Florence Zenobio was moved from San Lorenzo to Santa Reparata. Here there was an elm tree that, touched by the coffin of the Saint, started to grow green leaves even if in January. The north and the east doors were realized by Lorenzo Ghiberti. On the north doors are represented histories of the Old Testament, the four Evangelists and the four doctors of the catholic Church. The east doors are a masterpiece of Lorenzo Ghiberti. He worked 27 years to realize them, and here you will see the expression of the comprehension of the perspective. Inside, on the vault, there are mosaics realized by Venetian art crafters.

The Baptistery must be included among Florence churches as it was originally the main place of worship of Firenze. This is one of the city's oldest religious edifices and the baptistery still plays a very big part in the life of Florence. Of course, the building's piece de resistance are the 'Gates of Paradise' (as Michelangelo dubbed them), the golden doors sculpted in bronze by Ghiberti. Not everyone knows that the baptistery actually has three sets of bronze doors, each a masterpiece in its own right. Inside, you will be wowed by the 13th century mosaics.
