The authenticity of this location being The Prison of Socrates is up for debate. However, the gated caves are nice to observe and do offer some information plaques and benches for sitting in view of the site. This is a nice stop off the beaten trail on the Muses' Hill. The holes in the rock were where ancient Greeks placed wooden supports for a multi-story structure built onto the face of the rock.

Not many tourists know, that a quiet path in a looked-like abandoned door, can lead you to a scene much different from what you can see on the top of Acropolis. In the west of the Acropolis, on the way up to the Monument of Philopappos, is typical of the area, and demonstrates the town planning and architecture of ancient Athens. However, we now know that, the so-called Socrates Prison, is not where the great philosopher was imprisoned and finally executed. But along the way up, you will be able to have a slow stroll under the Athens sun, and finally reach to the Monument of Philopappos, where you can understand, what's the white of Athens.

On the eastern side of the Philopappos hill there are two caves carved into the rock, known as the prison of Socrates. In reality there are the remains of a residency of the 4th century BC which were erroneously identified with the place that Socrates, who was sentenced to death, was held and talked with his friend Crito just before his execution. During the Second World War the caves have been covered with a protective concrete wall in order to be used as a crypt of antiquities of the National Archaeological Museum.

As the name implies, this is where Socrates was imprisoned until his execution. Located at the foot of the acropolis and a short walk from the Iris Penthouse.
