Originally part of the Pocasset tribal homeland, the Tiverton Heights are separated from Aquidneck Island by only a narrow straight. In July of 1777, Lt. Col. William Barton led a raid against British troops from this position, and captured General Richard Prescott at his quarters in Portsmouth. Fort Barton Woods is an 83-acre natural area with trails that take visitors alongside the pristine Sin and Flesh Brook, where they can view many wildflowers, ferns, and animal habitats. If you're looking to go for a hike/walk, you've got to try this place. Beautifully maintained and well marked journey, there's about 3 miles of nature to enjoy. Wear good walking shoes as there's some deep steps and rugged terrain.
The historic area includes the redoubt, a network of earthen fortifications remaining from the Battle of Rhode Island in 1778. Fort Barton Woods is an 83-acre natural area with 3.5 miles of trails.
