Worth a mention since it is the largest stone circle to be found anywhere in mainland Scotland and you will most likely drive past it on your way to the cottage. After turning off the A76, opposite Holywood, onto the B729, the circle is found in a field to your left just before the road bends to the right. You can park on the grass near an information boulder just outside entrance to the field. In the 1800's, a bronze figure of St Norbert, dating from the 12th century , was uncovered at the circle and is now housed in Dumfries Museum. The Twelve Apostles (of which only 11 remain!!) may not have the grandeur of Stonehenge but is still worth a visit.

There’s a small lay-by to park in at the junction. During summer when the hedges are tall they’re quite difficult to see from the road. Access is via a gate and foot path. These stone are a fascinating reminder of the history of our area, and how it has changed over the centuries.

This stone circle is the largest on mainland Scotland & the 7th largest in Britain. Although called the twelve apostles, there are only eleven stones. The missing stone was removed in the 19th century, no one knows why. It is a popular gathering place to mark the summer & winter solstices. The location is easy to walk into though flat shoes are advisable - and it is free.
