Amazing place, offering stunning views, birds watching and healing mud baths. There is a Museum of salt and an information center, where you can learn more about the flora and fauna of the lake.

The spa town of Pomorie is located on a mainland promontory reaching far into the open sea, about 20 km north of Burgas. At its northern edge is a large lagoon from which salt has been extracted since Thracian times. Once salt has been exported, today it is an important part of mud peels, which mainly treat diseases of the musculoskeletal system, skin diseases – in recent years, psoriasis has been successfully treated here using luga (a very salty fluid obtained as a by-product of salt production). The natural black iron sand, which covers the local beaches, also has healing effects. Pomorie is famous for wine growing and cognac production – in the country’s largest wine mill and brandy distillery you can taste Slančev brjag, Pomorie and Pomorijska rakie cognacs. The town of Pomorie was founded in antiquity (4th century BC). Due to the fire at the beginning of the 20th century, the city cannot boast a large number of historical monuments, but what it cannot offer in history, it offers in the field of cultural scene. Hundreds of concerts and music and folklore festivals take place in the city during the summer months. In the town of Pomorie you will find many discos, cafes, wine bars and restaurants in the Bulgarian style with typical music and other specialties. The city has a mausoleum (built 3rd – 4th century) with Thracian, which was found in the area of Kouhata Mogila near Europa Camp. The grave is open to visitors. A quiet oasis of the city is represented by the Monastery of St. George, a complex of several religious buildings in perfectly maintained adjacent gardens. In the north of the city, in addition to salt mines, you can also admire the spa using salt mud on the edge of Lake Pomerania. It mainly treats diseases of the musculoskeletal system, gynecological and nervous diseases or psoriasis. Pomorie is known not only as a pleasant quieter resort, but also thanks to Lake Pomerania, which was already considered sacred by the Thracians. Because the mud in the lake was healing, the Romans built a spa here. Today, there are saltworks around the lake, which cover a substantial part of salt production in Bulgaria. The beaches are directly attractive for swimming and the fishing port and lively pedestrian zone for an evening walk, where you will definitely buy some souvenirs. Nature lovers can wait on the shores of the sea if they do not see the rare species of birds circling in the area, which occasionally visit here. If you have musculoskeletal or breathing problems, you can try treatment at a local spa. The medical procedures will certainly make your consumption of the well-known dry aromatic wine Pomorski Dimjat more pleasant. Pomerania is said to produce one of the best brandy in all of Bulgaria and really excellent wines! The resort of Pomorie has a unique nature, which makes it an attractive place for recreation throughout the season. The climate is extremely favorable: the sun is still shining and the average temperature in July is 24 degrees. The breeze blowing from the sea still brings fresh air. The morning before dawn, the air is full of ozone and negative ions, ultraviolet rays and iodine in the form of gas released from seaweed. Thanks to the slow cooling of the sea water, autumn is still warm. The average autumn temperature is 21 degrees. The most famous restaurants in the city are Tsarevets Restaurant and Peneka Restaurant. Furthermore, several small restaurants, fast food and shops. You can buy fresh vegetables and fruits from local growers right at the market. By bus you can get from Pomorie to Burgas, where the airport is easily accessible. Private water transport connecting Burgas and Nessebar can also be used for transport from Pomorie in agreement with the captain. The village of Sarafovo, 6 km south of Pomorie, also offers pleasant beaches. Atanassovo Lake Nature Reserve in the south is a refuge for hundreds of birds. The construction of Burgas Airport on the one hand and the development of Burgas on the other gradually reduced their numbers.

First time travellers to Bulgaria and one of my friends researched and found out about the mud at Pomerie lake. Rather reluctantly, we all went along with her idea of a day out! We took a taxi to the lake and our very helpful driver spoke to the elderly man and woman attendants who, for a few Lev per person will bring you a bucket of black mud from the salt flats. You then have to cover yourself with it and let it to dry, any smell evaporates. After about 20 to 30 minutes make your way to the lake to wash off, don't forget your sponge. At the toilet block we used the bucket to rinse any residue from each and get changed. There is a visitor centre (Unfortunately lunchtime when we were there) and a small salt museum entrance to which was a few Lev. In all it was a good day, we had a laugh at ourselves, had lovely soft skin and enjoyed lovely peaceful surroundings.
