Theo Michael's painting, Reverie, features the Kamares Aqueduct with a couple bathing in the sunlight on a beautiful spring day. This Roman style aqueduct was built in 1746 by Bekir Pasha, the Turkish governor of the town at that time. It carried water from 10 kilometres away to Larnaca and was in use until the late 1930's. As the story goes Theo's father maintained that he used to walk on top of the arches, cooling his feet on his way to town. We never quite took his story at face value until recently, when a customer in our art studio relaid the same anecdote of his own father to us. More than 20 arches are still intact which are beautifully illuminated at night. A path joins the site to a footpath on the East bank of the Salt Lake, creating a semi circular cycle route all the way to the mosque of Hala Sultan Tekke.

Kamares Aqueduct is located just outside the Larnaca city near the old road to Limassol & when it was first built by the Romans nearly 2000 years ago it was the most prominent water supply on the island. Kamares aqueduct was subsequently rebuilt in 1747 & currently stands in its present form at the site of the old Roman aqueduct.

Ancient aqueduct still mostly intact. Iconic view driving through Larnaca. There is a nice walk from here to the Salt Lake.

This beautiful 18th century aqueduct can be found on the road heading towards Lemesos in the area of Kamares, which takes its name from the distinctive arches (‘kamares’ in Greek). An open-air sight, the aqueduct was built in the Roman style in 1746 by the Turkish governor of Larnaka, Bekir Pasha, who funded it out of his own sources to carry water to Larnaka from a source about 10km away. The aqueduct was abandoned in 1939 and its function replaced by modern pipes. There are more than 20 arches still intact, and these are strikingly illuminated at night. A cobbled area with benches and a footpath allow you to enjoy the site of this monument, with the path linking up with Larnaka Salt Lake.
