A bite sized FREE museum just behind Selfridges department store and Marylebone high street. Wonderful High tea and lunch in their beautiful covered courtyard restaurant. Built as a private house so get 3 in one, house, museum and food. What’s not to like. London’s best kept secret.
Founded by the illegitimate son of the 4th Marquess of Hertford, who, on his death, left his mansion and collection to the nation, on the proviso that nothing was ever sold or lent out for an exhibition, so you can always bank on turning up and finding the Titian, Rembrandt and Velazquez paintings …
A beautiful house full of 18th and 19th c. artwork. Entrance is free and they do excellent tours.
One of my favourite museums in London. A small but wonderful formerly private collection of art, porcelain, furniture and armour in Hertford House. Open daily 10am-5pm. Admission free but you can pre-arrange a (paid) guided tour. Not on the main tourist circuit so usually quiet. Has a great café in…
“The Sherlock Holmes Museum is a privately run museum in London, England, dedicated to the famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. It is the world’s first museum dedicated to the literary character Sherlock Holmes. The best example of the living period costume I have come across! Absolutely everyone was in character! After giving the introduction, the butler was asked if Sherlock Holmes was real, and he kindly explained that the museum was there to help build the story. Brilliant experience and highly recommend!!”
“Have you ever wanted to hang out with all of the celebs and royals all at one time? Perhaps not, but here at Madame Tussauds you can do exactly that. It's weird but it works and is not to be missed.”
“French restaurant, part of petite chain, serving set menu of salad, steak and fries plus dessert”
“Fantastic cocktails and great tapas on the ground floor, upstairs is the restaurant which is well worth booking in advance to secure a table”
