It's the tallest mountain in Colorado, and the 2nd tallest in the contiguous U.S. Not for the feint of heart. Black Clouds trailhead is about a mile from our cabin, or the other trailheads are about 10 minutes away.
Mount Elbert is a great (not very difficult but may be crowded) hike to the highest point in Colorado. It is located just outside of town and easily accessible (no 4WD needed in summer months).
Do a 14er while your here...make sure you are acclimated and doing ok with the elevation. Always hike a 14er with the mentality that you will get as far as you can and enjoy the views. If you do make it to the top well that's a bonus! Strenuous but an amazing experience. Requires an early start and a good forecast.
