Food Scene

An anytime perfect hangout if you're the kind of person that enjoys working in a cafe. Reliable wifi, big tables and decent food. The coffee is a bit sweet for me, but the staff are great and the space is comfortable.

Just around the corner, quirkily decorated with all sorts of curios from older days. Great staff, and has wifi. Good for lunch, not so good for working or chilling at. The seats aren't the mostly comfortable and the table-chair height ratio is awkward. Worth exploring if you have a little leftover time but not for lingering at.

Hao Xiang Restaurant just next to Jewel Cafe and Bar. Great for a Singaporean breakfast of kaya-butter-toast-and-soft-boiled-eggs-with-coffee-or-tea set in the early mornings. I particularly enjoy the wonton mee and the prawn mee for lunch. Budget-friendly, delicious, and within walking distance.

Japanese-French decor inspired cafe serving typical brunch and western fare - comfy seats for chill hangouts, catching up with old friends, and lingering over a cup of tea. The food isn't anything to rave about but the space is nice and comfortable.

The coffee scene in Singapore has, in recent years, approached fever pitch and it's never been easier to get access to great coffee in our sunny island. The cold brew is Old Hen's signature drink so this is a great place to cool off if the afternoons get too balmy for you.

Taste of India is one of my favourite catch-all sort of Indian restaurants in Singapore - you can have both Northern and Southern dishes, and the prices are more than reasonable. The food is absolutely delicious (go for the mutton soup if you can) and if you're on a vegetarian diet this place will leave you one happy herbivore.

Back in the 1970s our government moved street food vendors off the streets and into more permanent, consolidated places of business, creating our ubiquitous food hawker centres scattered all over the island. Pek Kio Market is one of them that is closest to this apartment. It's a great place to immerse yourself amongst locals living their regular lives, taking their breakfasts and lunches. On weekdays it may be slightly quieter and weekends there will be a large crowd so be prepared! This market operates breakfasts and lunches. Some of the best stuff like the chai tow kway (carrot cake) sells out by 9am on a Sunday so being there early will have its perks!

Tiong Bahru Market is one of our favourite markets in Singapore. The hawker center upstairs has the best breakfast food (vegetarian beehoon, chwee kway, chai tow kway, prawn mee, soya milk, assorted pau) and its most famous wonton mee always sees a long queue. The fresh food market on the ground floor sells both cheap and fresh everything, and is a great place to have a little wander about if you enjoy immersing yourself in the daily lives of local residents. The Tiong Bahru Market is a daytime market - by 5pm everything has started to wind down and by 7pm it's nearly all closed.

For a true heartland experience, venture up to the North of Singapore where my wife grew up and find yourself in the centre of local living. The Chong Pang Food Market is a collection heart-warming hawker delights, and lies right smack in the middle of many small-business budget shops. Come on a Sunday to mingle with the neighbourhood residents enjoying their day out in full force.

Ban Leong Wah Hoe is my wife's favourite secret of the north. Located in a landed housing neighbourhood on Casuarina Road, it's one of the best cooks of Singapore's signature Black Pepper and Chilli crabs served at one of the lowest prices per kilo. Make a day trip out of it - come early in the morning for roti prata at the Indian stall next door. Then take a little hike into the Lower Pierce Reservoir just around the corner, immerse yourself in our balmy tropical rainforest. Take a cab up to the Singapore Zoological Gardens at Mandai just a short ride away. In the evening, take a cab back down to Ban Leong for crab dinner.

Arts & Culture

The Little India district is a relic from Singapore's days as a British Colony, and continues to house a concentration of goods and services catering to Indian cultural purposes. Come on weekday afternoons if what you're looking for is to browse and peruse the various goods available for purchase, to soak in the colours, sights, smells and sounds at your own pace. Come on weekends to be a part of the lively crowd. Little India is one of the most crowded places to be on a weekend and you'll find yourself knee-deep in company the moment you get off the train. Soak up the energy of hardworking residents revelling in their day off; better still, come early and enjoy some heavenly thosai for breakfast. Yum! For the night owls amongst us, Little India is home to the legendary Mustafa Centre - a multi-storied mammoth complex in the centre of the district that sells everything you could ever imagine, 24/7. I mean they sell soap, perfume, watches, gold, vegetables, fridges, computers, cameras, memory cards, electrical cables, toys, you name it, they've got it, and for cheaper too.

Tiong Bahru is one of Singapore's oldest neighbourhoods, having existed before World War II and seen many upheavals and changes over the years. Many of its low-rise apartment buildings currently still standing date from before the war and are a testament to Singapore's earliest public-housing initiatives. The neighbourhood is currently home to a growing collection of independent food and beverage establishments offering a wide range of cuisines from Japanese fine dining to cupcake bakeries, western brunches, craft coffee, takeaway pizza, coffeeshop pasta, bak kut teh, teochew porridge, hawker fare and Indian food. Yoga, art, books and local designer apparel have also come to call this neighbourhood home.
