This is a wonderful place where the farm-to-table menu changes every month featuring locally-sourced produce, meats, fish and poultry. Brian, the owner, is a personal friend of ours and a fantastic chef. Get there early as the place is always crowded.

Unfortunately, Giuseppe's burnt down in late June of this year! It was by far, our favorite local restaurant. The owner does have plans to rebuild. There is another Giuseppe's location in downtown San Luis Obispo where the food is still great and their bar is even bigger and better.

This menu offers a fresh, unique Spanish-infused menu. They serve in-house freshly-made corn and flour tortillas with several different salsas and honey butter as a complimentary appetizer with meals. If you are in the mood for something less than a full meal, the carnitas or chicken nachos are generous and filling and more than enough for two people to share!

Madonna Inn is a fun place to visit for the time warp factor. You feel like you are walking into a parlor decorated by the Pink Panther. It is truly one of the most over-the-top décor disasters that exist, but it is so outlandish that it makes it a tourist attraction. However, their cakes are worth the trip and are known all over the world. Delish!! While you are there, be sure to tour the grounds and ask if you can view some of their unique rooms. They are a trip.

This is a wonderful small local tasting room and musical venue. Newly-opened and acquired by Charlie Puffer, this wine bar is wonderful. It used to be called Vino Versato for anyone who used to go there. Charlie has put his own unique flair and vibe to the place. There is live music most nights and he serves a variety of EXCELLENT small plates to go with his excellent selection of wines. There is ample inside and outside seating (old church pews to boot!) The atmosphere is so cozy, friendly and welcoming. You can't miss this place if you are looking for some old fashioned Pismo Beach hospitality. Cindy Giovanchinni (the previous owner of Vino) started the amazing spirit of the place and Charlie has continued it and expanded it in his own creative way.

If you are visiting between the months of October and February, you cannot miss a visit to the Monarch Butterfly Grove. This is their mating season and if you are lucky, you will experience the wonder of thousands of Monarchs in various stages of reproduction. If it is any other month, it is still worthwhile to visit the grove and walk the trail, as it leads to the beach dunes. There are many beautiful photo opportunities that will memorialize this visit for years to come.

Taking a walk along the beach is one of the best things you can do during your visit. You can either drive there or ride your bike (or one of our beach cruisers). From our house, it should take no more than about 10 mins to arrive at the sand. We are about 1/2 mile from the ocean as the crow flies.

Pirate's Cove is actually a nude beach but there is a hiking trail you can take by driving along Avila Beach Drive like you are going to visit downtown. Well before you reach downtown, you will see a little turnoff on your left that takes you up a hill and around another bend up higher to a dirt parking area that leads to the mouth of the hiking trail. At this point you are high above Pirate's Cove and the beachcombers below will appear quite small. There are usually quite a few hikers in the area so it is not difficult to find the trail. Follow it and when you come to any fork, veer to the right. Keep veering to the right until you reach the edge and can look down at the beach. If you go further to the right you will find yourself entering an open cave that goes all the way to the edge of a cliff. You can enter there and take some amazing photos. Many kids go up there to party and have camp fires. One of the signs you are in the right place is that the open cave that leads to the edge of the cliff will have a lot of soot from all the campfires. Enjoy!!

Avila Beach is a darling area to visit. It is only about a 7 minute scenic drive north. There is a public parking lot that holds a lot of cars but in the summer months and at times when the weather is favorable, the lot fills quickly. There are many great shopping opportunities, small wine bars, a yogurt shop, coffee bars and sandwich shops, a small grocery store, restaurants, a pier and a lovely beach for walks. On Friday nights from May through October, there is a Farmer's Market in the open plaza next to the boardwalk. Live music is featured and the locals dance freely in the plaza. Artists show their wares, organic produce is sold, food carts abound. It is a lot of fun.

Hearst Castle is really an actual castle of museum quality and a site to see if you are at all interested in the history of William Randolph Hearst and his dynasty. Tours are very popular and sell out quickly so advance reservations are a must. Plan a whole day if you make the trek to San Simeon and if possible, book more than one tour. We also like to piggy back a visit to the Elephant Seals and a stop in Cambria when we go to Hearst Castle since they are both located within close proximity. If you are going to drive there, you might as well make it worth your while.
