Meat and Sauce is probably the first sandwich-eatery in town that provides a real gastro-experience. The selection may seem narrow at first glance, yet everyone will find the perfect flavor-combination that suites their taste. The sandwiches are all heartily filled up, and they are dipped into a sauce – so it’s the best to make sure a napkin is always around.

Oriental Soup House is one of the city’s most authentic Vietnamese soup places, dreamed up by a pair of Vietnamese-French siblings. Oriental Soup House offers an infinite number of options: in addition to the usual Pho and others, we can put together our own soups from the ingredients listed on the menu. They also make an effort at preparing the dishes based on home-style recipes and in the most authentic way possible; thus, instead of cooking the sirloin, they scald it.

A new tapas bar, Vicky Barcelona on Dob Street, peps up Gozsdu Courtyard with authentic flair. The bar has a proper Spanish atmosphere, and the fact that the employees are either native Spanish speakers or speak the language fluently just adds to the Mediterranean feel. Besides the authentic food, there are also fine cocktails and wines, and instead of commercial broadcasting, they play Spanish music, which will definitely put you in the mood for a fiesta.

There is a popular wine bar on the Buda side called Palack Wine Bar, whose owners decided to recreate the same friendly and cozy atmosphere on the Pest side; therefore, they opened 0,75 on Szent István Square, and await visitors with a wide selection of drinks, and the same prices as in their first bar. Their selection includes more than 100 different kinds of wines, draught beers, homemade syrups, lemonades, coffees, as well as a prominent assortment of whiskys, including a special Japanese type.

Among the trendy restaurants of Liszt Ferenc Square, you can find Menza, a vintage place where the tablecloths are still striped and the chicken soup is still rich in meat. However, apart from letcho, you can find all modern options on the menu - even hamburgers. Supposedly, they invented the idea of serving all the vegetables, extra meat and dumplings in a separate bowl, and then they pour the soup on it from something that looks like a teapot. It’s definitely worth to drop by for a lunch menu, and for a nice cocktail outside on the terrace on a lovely summer day.

First of all, we must declare that we love this spot. 'Why?' you might ask. Perhaps because Fröccsterasz doesn't pretend to be more than a pub terrace. The prices are neither over-the-top, nor overtly cheap. This open-air fröccs bar is found right next to Deák Ferenc Square, in Erzsébet Square. The appeal of the place lies in the fact that sitting here immerses you completely into the buzz of Erzsébet Square. Unfortunately, you can't reserve a table here, so if you're planning to spend time at this place, be sure to arrive early, as Fröccsterasz is brimming in the evenings. If Akvárium is too much to deal with, the Basilica is too sparkly, and Anker't is too far, Fröccsterasz is a friendly, albeit seasonal, option.

The opening of Szimpla Kert in 2002 has been literally and also symbolically a milestone in the alternative life of Budapest. Converting an old factory into a huge open-air cinema and pub, we were able to create a unique framework for hosting concerts, theatre shows and many different cultural events. Szimpla defines itself as a ’cultural reception space’, indicating our intention to embrace genres and performers off the mainstream, presenting them in an informal atmosphere. Moreover, with constantly supporting initiatives for urban sustainability, Szimpla has been serving as an ultimate incubation house of green ideas from the very beginning.

Restaurant, cultural space, party place in one building. Ötkert is a place that you can’t leave without a word: since 2010 it is one of the most popular clubs of Budpest with cool people, good music, famous djs, concerts and not to mention the unique programs. Beside that, in this beautifully renovated 19th century building you can find our restaurant, which attracts the customers for a goulash soup or for a rose fruch with the energy of youth no matter if it’s before noon or at night. Ötkert’s terasse waiting for its customers with live music at summertime, and gives the younger and less young party faces the chance to party until sunrise with 5 djs, 2 rooms as well.

DiVino, probably the most popular wine bar in Budapest, is situated right next to St. Stephen's Basilica. An initiative of Junibor, the association of young Hungarian vintners, DiVino was an instant success. The modern, trendy, youthful attitude is also reflected by the bar's interior design: the minimalist furniture and the community-creating, mile-long table all represent the Junibor philosophy. The wine selection is based on the very best bottles of the cca. 25 cellars listed as organizational members. The kitchen might not be perfect, but there are plenty of excellent wine snacks.

This nightclub, previously known as 4BRO, used to lure people in from Csörsz Street with its strong cocktails and rhythms that made everyone dance. But they closed their headquarters in Buda and reopened where kolor used to be – at Gozsdu. The new club has a spacious and cozy guest area, and a minimal food menu – compensated by a much more serious cocktail menu and electronica programs. The latter retains the previous athletic vibe, as they hope that 4BRO will become the future meeting place of snowboarder/wake boarder/skater/surfer buddies.

Tired of your average party venue? Spend a night at the Fogas Ház, one of the vanguards of the ruin pub scene in Akácfa utca. The place has long been a catchment basin for arts and artists, but it was not until 2010 that it reached its current form and popularity. Besides sporting a great name (meaning "House of Teeth", which derives from a 100-year-old sign found during the initial renovation that advertised denture repair), Fogas Ház also has a stylishly interior and budget-friendly prices, plus dance floors to help cure your boogie fever! Lärm, Pont and Liebling are also part of the party-complex so bring on the cocktails or dance until dawn!

The least bit surprisingly, Mika Tivadar Bar was named after the late Tivadar Mika, one-time iron and copperware factory owner. Mika’s former factory in Kazinczy utca is now home to one of the best new-wave clubs in the city, where the people of the nearby 400 are also returning guests due to the fact that the two clubs have similar air, design, and audience. Akvárium Klub, the surrounding Erzsébet Square, and the adjacent Deák Square together constitute the largest and perhaps best-known meeting point of downtown Budapest. Thousands of youngsters gather here night after night to chill out in the park or on the steps of the club. Akvárium Klub is more than a simple bar: it is a culture center with a wide musical repertoire from mainstream to underground. There is always a good concert and a smashing exhibition, performance, or other event happening here, in a friendly scene, situated right in the city center. Furthermore, Volt-Lokál found inside brings the atmosphere of the best festivals to Budapest week by week.

Lake Lupa and its more than half kilometer long shore, which resulted in a crystal clear water, white sand, palm trees, sunshades, cocktails, and beach food. The location is near the border of Budakalász, which might seem to be too far for the first time, but actually it is only 12-20 minutes away from Árpád Bridge by car (there is a parking lot near the entrance), and it is only 17 minutes away on public transport ( take the suburban railway ro “Budakalász” station). In return for the small journey you get a true seaside feeling; you can sip on cocktails, swim, play beach volleyball, football, do kayaking, or even SUP surf. They even made a separate “kid’s beach” for children.

Arts & Culture

The Hungarian State Opera (Magyar Állami Operaház) is the masterpiece of Miklós Ybl, one of the greatest Hungarian architects of all time. The Opera was opened in 1884. The building is a splendid example of the neo-Renaissance style, while its rich ornaments also show a few baroque elements. The auditorium can seat 1300 persons, and although it is not the largest opera, it has the 3rd best acoustics in Europe after the Scala in Milan and the Opera Garnier in Paris. Its most widely noted piece is The Nutcracker, which has enjoyed unfaltering popularity for years - despite being on show all December, it is almost impossible to get tickets for this Tschaikovsky ballet. There are two guided tours of the house every day, at 3 PM and 4 PM.

The building of the Budapest Operetta Theatre (Budapesti Operettszínház) in Nagymező Street was designed by the Viennese studio Fellner and Helmer. Director Miklós Gábor Kerényi manages a true musical theatre here, with Hungarian operettas and contemporary musicals on the repertoire in addition to the historical-literary musicals aimed at the younger generation. The 500 performances in front of 400 000 guests each year make this one of the most frequented theatres of Hungary. The air-conditioned auditorium seats 901 persons and is quite popular in the circle of foreigners, so the operettas are subtitled in German, while the musicals are subtitled in English.
