"Good, better, best" is the mantra at this celebrated cafe and restaurant on Wellington's thriving Cuba Street. Owner Marc is a doyen of the local restaurant scene, training under pioneering restauranteur Lois Daish. Loretta offers excellent service, an inventive menu and great wine. We love it!

If you're wanting a quiet place to read with coffee and a sweet treat, then you'll find it here too. Superb wine list!

Parks & Nature

The Botanic Gardens are mere minutes from our place, with the nation's parliament along the way, or up the Cable Car. They have long been a place of leisure for Wellingtonians and represent our love for exotics, native flora and sculpture.

Drinks & Nightlife

Matterhorn is as quintessentially Wellington as the Beehive! Originally a Swiss coffee house opened in 1963, it has metamorphosed into a regular’s restaurant, café, cocktail bar and supper club. To get a sense for the significance of this place, it was the bar of choice to Louis Armstrong when he performed in Wellington. Enough said!

If you ask the owner at the Thistle Inn he'll tell you that this was the publican house of choice for Te Rauparaha -- the hugely significant iwi chief in the 1800s. That should give you a sense for the heritage of this building, and its long-standing place in the history of Wellington. Great for a pint.

Sightseeing

What's not to like? From our place to Oriental Parade and beyond, the Wellington waterfront is the lifeblood of our city. It's where runners cross paths with theatre performers, where wind belts commuting public servants, and where everybody gushes 'you can't beat Wellington on a good day.'

Te Papa Tongarewa is the museum of New Zealand. It gives a home to our national heritage, our stories, our art and forms a critical and participatory role in our identity as New Zealanders. Put aside the day for this one, and then the next day... We visit at least once a month!

City Gallery Wellington doesn't own its own collection, instead it puts on exhibitions sourced from domestic and international collections and it sure does that well! We keep a tabs on what's on there, so just ask.

Pukeahu National War Memorial Park is on a site of significance to Taranaki Whānui iwi who were imprisoned here illegally during the 1860s land wars, and were made to chop down the mountain, Pukeahu, that was once here to turn into bricks to build a bigger prison, army buildings and buildings around New Zealand. That arm history is beginning to be more fulsomely told here.
