L’Entrepôt is much better than it looks. Which isn’t to say that this eastern outpost of Borough Wines doesn’t look promising: it does, with its shabby industrial chic, and wine for sale in the barrel and bottle. On weekdays, the kitchen is open only in the evening (grazing aside) and Saturdays and Sundays focus on brunch; add the fact that the group is best known as a small, fiercely independent wine merchant and you would be forgiven for assuming the food was merely a bolt-on. Wrong. From interesting egg dishes to a three-course rotisserie menu, via a few French and Modern Euro bistro dishes, the kitchen staff know how to put an appealing menu together and deliver it to restaurant standards. Eggs benedict was so perfectly judged that we regretted not trying the oeufs en meurette (in red wine). Mallard breast with beetroot and potato gratin was flavour-packed; chips, bread and butter were, importantly, spot-on. The wine list, sourced directly by Borough, is predominantly French and Spanish, with recognised appellations complemented by more off-piste bottles that the staff are delighted to contextualise – the seldom-found aramon grape in a sulphur-free Coteaux d’Ensérune from Languedoc did indeed deliver Rhône-like depth. A slightly older, laid-back Dalston crowd have adopted the place as their hangout.

Your street food comes with a side of fun at this night market for those who like to eat on their feet Street Feast returns to Dalston Yard for a summer-long stretch of night markets for those who like to be seen eating. New for 2016 are some modern classics of the food stall scene; Hawaiian-inspired sushi bowls from Poke, fiery chicken from White Men Can't Jerk and juicy hunks of beef from Stakehaus. All-time favourites making a return appearance include Kimchinary, Bleecker St and Smokestak. Eating on your feet is likely unless you've managed to snaffle a corner of one of the tables, lots of which are covered so that you don't have to cancel in case of rain. Pop to the Kamm Shed for a refreshing aperitif and the Tequila Treehouse for a post-food shot. This is a food market that knows how to party.

A popular cafe, deli and bistro in Dalston, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. It certainly looks the part, with bunches of dried chillies and garlic bulbs hanging from high, shelves stacked with pantry produce and cute little hampers overflowing with canned olives, tinned sardines and dried pasta. A long counter showcases the colourful salads. Breakfasts prove popular, with Monmouth coffee and Kandula tea served alongside granola, traditional English breakfasts, veggie versions, eggs benedict, omelettes and shakshuka - a Middle Eastern skillet of eggs, tomatoes, peppers and onions. Mimosas and Red Snappers (Gin Mare, tomato juice, vegetable broth, celery salt, lemon juice and black pepper) sit under the 'hair of the dog' section - a sensible addition to the menu perhaps, given the locale. Those pretty salads (fennel, pear, radicchio and pomegranate, or cauliflower, brussel sprouts, cranberries and almonds for example) prove popular at lunch and dinner, and are served on their own or as plates of three or four together. Lunchtimes also see sandwiches, burgers and mains such as lemon and tarragon chicken with shallots, or sweet-chilli glazed salmon served. The charcoal grill is fired up in the evening, with onglet steaks, lamb fillets and thyme chicken breasts given the smokey treatment. A short wine list concentrates on the old world, with plenty from France, Spain, Italy and Portugal. Keep an eye out for special additions to the drinks list, too.
