Food Scene

Tasteful, ethnic atmosphere decor and deeeeeelishus food. The gyro's are our favorite item. Ask for an extra napkin : )

Amy's and the Whetstone have the best views of our Connecticut River and Mount Wantastiquet, plus excellent food. I am in the toasted-sourdough-roll-with brie for $2 habit.

Locally brewed coffee, board games, a couch, under ground - perfect place to disappear for a bit with a hot cup o' joe, a pastry, and a good book.

Great views of the bird sanctuary water park. When the mists roll in, it takes our breath away. Open Mic nights too. Outdoor seating. Lots of seating indoors and outdoors.

Drinks & Nightlife

While we do not drink, we have heard good things about the events, like game night and dancing, at the Whetstone. There is also a roof top venue overlooking the river. Fabulous views of our river and mountain. Dancing too! Call ahead for seating or pop in and see what happens. If you must wait a bit, enjoy a stroll on the bridge over the river.

Arts & Culture

Definitely worth a visit. This house was built by a manager of the Estey Organ factory in 1880. The factory used to be across the street! Then it moved up the street onto Birge street. Walking distance. (Just about everything is in walking distance). Impressive history of taking care of its workers, including women.

Truly excellent. The museum keeps its exhibits fresh, with a good variety from room to room. Something for the whole family. We have taken some memorable family pictures with the art. Plus, there is a beautiful view of Mount Wantastiquet across the river.

Eclectic, colorful, peezazzzzzz. A store and so much more! Arts and crafts unlike anywhere else. A real mood lifter for us. The kids love it too. Handy place to have in your back pocket when looking for a spark of wonder and awe.

Parks & Nature

Three trails to choose from. The trail on the left is flat and passes two waterfalls. The other two trails take you to the top for excellent views. It is steep and many areas are a bit rocky though. Not a lot of view until the top, but it is worth it.

Sightseeing

Rudyard Kipling's house. A local treasure. "It is in this house that Kipling wrote Captains Courageous, The Jungle Book, The Day's Work, and The Seven Seas, and did work on Kim and The Just So Stories."

Getting Around

The train station is about a ten minute walk. Super easy. And, such a beautiful location to wait for the train. It is right behind the museum, facing the mountain and river.
