Food Scene

Outstanding historic Irish pub/restaurant in the Old First Ward with a view of the grain elevators serving a modest menu made with fresh ingredients. Oh, did I mention they brew their own beer and that the owner is a beer genius?

Local hipster cafe that I admit does brew a good cup in a minimalist set-up.

Sleepy Venezuelan place right down the road that serves up phenomenal food right under the nose of the hipsters.

Awesome little Ethiopian restaurant run by a single couple. They just moved to this new location and I haven't been to it yet but I imagine it is the same. I call their coffee (boba) black gold, is the best I have ever had, and it always takes 20min to make so set aside some time.

This is the best old-school joint, replete with local blue-collar crowd in South Buffalo. It's not a fancy setup (looks about the same since the 80s), but if you are looking to try one of Buffalo's sought-after Friday fishfrys and get some cheap beers it is your best bet. Their burgers are phenomenal and tie Gene's for my #1.

Same owner as Gene McCarthy's and right down the road from it. Former funeral house (get it?) turned artsy cafe. Same attention to detail as the restaurant, just a tad pricey.

Closest experience to actually stepping back in time, this 1920s era family-restaurant has stayed completely true to form and still staffs a full-time meat slicer. Beef-on-weck is a Buffalo specialty and it can't be outdone here.

Drinks & Nightlife

Smaller, cool-noir upscale bar that does cocktails right. They have a magician on Wednesdays that is actually impressive

Sightseeing

Historic grain-silo area that does tours (can be pricy), but often features low-publicity, eclectic, artsy events (for free or very cheap) if you do a search. The acoustics alone are worth checking it out for.
