If you want get a sense of mostly local Kauai scene, lively, loud chatter with a sports bar/restaurant atmosphere, this is a great place to go. Food it great, try their ribs, Philly Steak or Chicken Fried Steak. Portions are large, people and prices are friendly. They also serve breakfast.

They have a deli and hot food take-out which is fresh and tasty as well as full line of groceries, produce, personal items, a pharmacy and Red Box. The bathrooms are to the right at the front door. Bakery items are good except the donuts. (go to Safeway for these).

The food take-out are not quite as fresh or tasty as Food Land's. Bathrooms are in the back through the stocking area near the bakery, which is yummy and includes upscale items. There's a pharmacy, lovely, large, pricy floral selection and Red-Box. Self check-out in available. Customer Service is often not maned and finding someone to help you in the aisles is an adventure. But the kicker is that some of the prices are double that of other grocery stores. Glitz comes at a price but if you can't find what you want elsewhere this is your best bet.
For organic foods and produce this is the most convenient and well stocked store. It has everything you could imagine. I highly recommend their raw apple juice. They also incorporate a deli, selection of fresh food dishes and smoothies, bulk everything (self selection) skin care, makeup and highly knowledgeable help in the holistic health care area. It is a virtual emporium of natural pleasures and products.

Papaya's Natural Foods
4-901 Kuhio HwyFor organic foods and produce this is the most convenient and well stocked store. It has everything you could imagine. I highly recommend their raw apple juice. They also incorporate a deli, selection of fresh food dishes and smoothies, bulk everything (self selection) skin care, makeup and highly knowledgeable help in the holistic health care area. It is a virtual emporium of natural pleasures and products.
Drinks & Nightlife
Every time we drive past this local restaurant and bar, we say, "We should give it a try". But it hasn't happened yet.
I guess because the things that make it noticeable, are the same things we "elders" don't enjoy. It is definitely lively, full of energy, with loud current music, and young (twenties, thirties) looking people mingling. This is all visible from those "youngsters" awaiting entrance. I bet it gets more so
inside. If you are in this age group, give it a try and let us know.

Street Burger

It's the best luau on the island. Get there early and roam the beautiful grounds, take the boat tour to have all the features explained to you. See how they prepare the pit for the pig (best place for a Kauian pig). The Buffet is comprehensive with both Hawaiian native dishes and mainland specialties.
Live entertainment during and after dinner if you go to the ampatheater for the Polynesian Cultural Review with Hula, Madam Pelli, fire, and thunder, dancers representing many cultures.
It's not a Hawaiian vacation without a Luau.

Most all carvers have begun to use stone grinders as it is much faster. Historians are saying this is the last structure to be built with these materials and workmanship. Be sure to call ahead to schedule a spot in the weekly tour. It is well worth your time.

They carry unique original clothing pieces, some from Kauai designers, others from well known designer like "Jonny Was". Everything from linen-hemp sportswear to Silk and Linen evening wear. The store also carries gifts, jewelry and other products, including soaps, shoes (some European) and unique leather purses. The Shop Girl is very friendly and offers individual attention if not too crowded. As my favorite clothing store, it has that magical "pull you in" quality. Sizes from xs to xl. Quality clothing with prices from "great deal" to "too rich for my blood".
