A visit gives you a good idea of how people traditionally lived here in the Gambia and West-Africa. Not too big, easy to combine with visiting the famous Tanji fish market or the beach (which is quiet around the museum area).

You can also buy cotton, tie dye material per meter and bring it to your own tailor. Apart from the craft market you will find many shops for many products. Have a look and enjoy! But... beware of your bag and smartphone!

Shopping

Shopping in Serrekunda is a 'must have done'. It is an adventure, an experience. Just watch your phone and wallet. Take a local guide and sit down at a restaurant where you can just relax and watch the movements of all the people around you. You can video's and cd's everywhere. There is a craftmarket near Serrekunda main junction. Clothes, statues, jewelry etc. Bargaining is normal in the Gambia. Do as the Gambians do: accept the price when you will be happy to get it for that price. Paying more means better income for sellers who very often are very poor.

Try! This is sold by ladies who also sell futo, made of steamed millet. Very tasty and healthy! Start your conversation with the sellers with a greeting: 'A salam aleikum', they will like it!

Parks & Nature

Because it was a beautiful place near the beach. It has been changed in 2017-2018 and lost a lot of its authentic character. But it's still worth a visit, sit there quietly in the shadow, while you see the monkeys around you. You don't need to take a guide, nor food for the monkeys.

Because you will see crocodiles and you will be able to touch them. Take a guide and ask them to tell you about the crazy amount of crocodiles who live there. Don't forget to ask them why the pond is sacred. There are some good stories! There is a small museum, worth a visit! It can be dirty and smelly, especially in the hottest season. That is the Gambia as well. Good to combine it with a visit to Bakau Craft Market or Lebato restaurant, for which you enter the road to the beach in Fajaro.
