Sightseeing

Only 5 mins from Air BnB. One of the best beaches in Southland!! You don't want to miss this spectacular place!! : ) On Gemstone Beach the surf has been known to wash up semi-precious gems such as garnet, jasper, quartz and nephrite for keen explorers to find. The beach is in a constant state of change with the surface shifting from sand to stones with the storms and tides. 'Gems' have often been found amongst the beautiful array of multi coloured rocks, and in the least your fossicking is guaranteed to uncover some very interesting stones. The rugged and remote location of Gemstone Beach means it is often deserted and the wild Southern Ocean feeds magnificent surf on to Orepuki Beach delivering some of the best surf NZ has to offer. Winter wetsuit recommended! Also a great beach for Surfcasting.

Tuatapere sits on the edge of wilderness amid spectacular unspoilt scenery and lush rolling farmland. It is the launch pad to accessing the variety of natural environments and adventure activities in Western Southland, including world-class jet boating and hiking. Lying on the Southern Scenic Route, it is an increasingly well-travelled place to stop. Tuatapere has a rich sawmilling history and is home to a fascinating logging museum, along with many other quaint reminders of the town’s pioneering history. Tui Base Camp not only offers a range of affordable accommodation and facilities for travellers, it is also the homebase for the World Famous Tuatapere Sausage, as the town is also known as the sausage capital of New Zealand. The Waiau River flows through Tuatapere, which is 8km from the southern coast, before reaching Te Waewae Bay and the majestic expanses of Blue Cliffs Beach. The South Coast Track and the impressive 3-day Hump Ridge Track begin at the end of the bay.

City/town information

Only a 20 min drive south-east, you will reach Riverton or will have likely passed through it on your way to our little Beach Oasis. A great little town to explore and eat at your own leisure. This place is special as it was where Steve and I raised our 8 (now) adult children for 20 + years. Lots to see and explore, yet so close.
