City/town information

Glenbeigh is a lovely little town on the way to Rossbeigh Beach. You can also turn off right before you cross the river on the way to Glenbeigh to get to Cromane Beach, a nice, tame beach for smaller people. Emilie’s in Glenbeigh has some amazing bread, baked goods, and coffee, if you’re headed out to Rossbeigh for a swim or stroll around the dunes. The Centra in Glenbeigh has some surprisingly good pizza, ice cream, and other groceries, if you’re headed back from the beach to the house. Rossbeigh Beach is an amazing beach, Ivereagh Peninsula’s literal answer to Dingle’s Inch Beach.

We highly recommend Keane’s SuperValu in Killorglin for your shopping needs. It’s a fifteen minute drive, or thereabouts, from the house. There’s a gas station there and the nicest SuperValu in all of Ireland with bottled water. Eurospar, in the center of Killorglin across from the Garda station, is also a good option and tends to be open later. For other food-related stuff, Burke’s Butchers in Killorglin (across from the big parking lot in the center of town near the church) is excellent, as is Jack’s Bakery at the bottom of the town before you cross over the river. Bridge 21 is an excellent restaurant on the main drag, if you want to eat out, as in Bianconi Inn. For all your hardware, gardening, and other needs, Topline Boyle’s is the most amazing place on Earth. If you forgot your power saw or ladder or sheep dip, this is the place to get it.

Ireland’s highest peak is right at the doorstep. We recommend parking at the Hydro Road car park for a quieter walk up into the mountains. From here you can access the Caher and Caher West peaks. You can also reach Carrauntoohill from here via a ridge walk around Caher, but it’s a long hike. The walk to the basin of the Reeks isn’t too tough (after the initial climb out of the parking lot, which is a little steep). For an easier, more direct approach to Carrauntoohill, you can use Cronin’s Yard (€2 parking fee, so make sure you have a €2 coin!).

We have kayaks, seats for the kayaks, paddles, life jackets, and a fishing rod available for use on and around the lake. Kayaks are usually in the garage or stored under the house, paddles in the garage, and seats and life jackets in the closet opposite the dining room. Please put the items away where you found them, so they last longer. It’s easiest to launch the kayaks from the shore to the left of the pier, especially if the water is high. From the harbor you can exit the cove to the north around Robert’s Island (and the Ard na Sidhe) for an easy paddle most days, or you can go south towards Cappanalea. This way can be trickier to get back from many days due to the wind and currents. Be careful around the shore, as the water is deep enough in the middle of the cove, but gets very shallow, very quick near the edges. This isn’t usually a big issue with the kayaks, but the fin of a paddleboard might get snagged unexpectedly. Trash

Trash pick up is every other Friday. There will be a schedule posted somewhere in the house that tells you which days to take the bins from inside the garage and lug them up the hill, through the gate, down the driveway and across the cow grate to the stone wall to the right of the driveway. The bins are stored in the garage... The one with the blue lid is for dry recycling. The one with the green lid is for general waste. We have a box for glass and there is a smaller brown bin is for compost waste, ie. Veg peelings, teabags, eggshells.

The Windows

Especially in the summer, you may want to keep the windows open. In order to not wake up consumed by the many different bugs of Kerry, we highly recommend spraying around the opening of the windows or doors with peppermint oil, there should be some available in the house.
