Surrounded by foliage that drapes itself over the damp rock walls, Killen Falls will have you feeling like you are in your own hidden paradise as you listen to the crashing waterfall. Killen Falls is home to one of the last standing remnants of the big scrub rainforest. The big scrub rainforest that once blanketed the Northern Rivers before the cedar-getters cleared most of this forest. It is significant to the region so it is very important that you respect the area and take your rubbish home with you. The Killen Falls viewing platform is a 660 metre return walk. The base of the falls is a 1km return walk from the car park area. The walk is a grade 3 bush walk and bush walking experience is recommended as the track is steep. Suggested duration of visit: 1 hour including picnicing time.

Brunswick Heads is all about life's simple pleasures. Despite the surrounding coastal development, Brunswick Heads has retained its traditional seaside village atmosphere. Timber bridges link the riverside Torakina, a safe, quiet beach at the mouth of the Brunswick River and to the surf beach that spans the coastline all the way to Byron Bay. The north bank of the river hosts a protected rainforest and the southern bank provides a harbour and small marina for fishing boats and small craft. Mt Chincogan and Mt Warning provide a spectacular hinterland backdrop to the river that meanders up to the small town of Mullumbimby.

Located about halfway between Lennox Head and Byron Bay, Newrybar is a historic hinterland village with charm to spare. One of the biggest drawcards here is Harvest, an award-winning restaurant, deli and bakery housed in what was the oldest bakery in the country. Harvest creates legendary sourdough from the 119-year-old wood-fired oven; stocks a fascinating array of local products in the deli; and its seasonal menu at the restaurant draws people from far and wide. The hamlet has more than its share of great retail, too: don’t miss Newrybar Merchants, where you can pick up homewares and lifestyle pieces by local artists and artisans (in a charming 1890s homestead); the eponymous studio of jewellery designer Louise Shaw; and more great homeware finds at Luther & Co. Drive the country roads surrounding Newrybar to discover coffee and macadamia plantations and farm-gate stalls (many of them along Broken Head, Brooklet and Piccadilly Hill roads). Take a dip at Killen Falls and stay at a local bed and breakfast, where a country welcome is always guaranteed.

Bangalow is a picturesque town combining a traditional streetscape with modern appeal. The main street is a pleasure to stroll along, filled with opportunities to indulge in excellent local food and boutique shopping. Located in the gentle hills of the Northern Rivers, Bangalow is 16km or a 20-minute scenic drive from Lennox Head. Although a camp was established in Bangalow as early as the 1840’s to house timber cutters it wasn’t until the 1880’s that the town was founded. The name Bangalow is thought to be a derivative of the Banjalang Aboriginal word “Bangalla” meaning ‘a low hill’ or ‘a kind of palm tree’. Bangalow is known as a pretty town with lovely parks, intriguing shops and high quality cafes and restaurants. The historical architecture of the federation buildings give a warm ambiance to the town while the surrounding landscape consists of fertile countryside. From these surrounds macadamia nuts, fruits and vegetables, coffee, dairy and meat are all produced. It is well worth a drive to explore the hinterland, home to quaint villages and hidden culinary gems.

The small town of Mullumbimby – a 40min drive inland from Byron Bay – is the perfect base to explore the stunning hinterland of the North Coast of NSW. Nestled beside the Brunswick River and beneath the escarpments of the Great Dividing Range, it’s emerging as quirky and colourful rural escape. Mullumbimby is so close to nature that you can go bushwalking right within the town limits. You can also visit the Brunswick Valley Heritage Park, a botanical haven for hundreds of rainforest plant species, some of which are endangered. Take the heritage park's trail to the Brunswick River for a picnic by the water.

Lennox Head is one of Australia’s National Surfing Reserves. While the serious surfers head to Boulder Beach, beginners can take a lesson with Soul Surf School or Lets Go Surfing. Pat Morton Lookout is a great spot to watch the action. Beach-goers will want to head straight for Seven Mile Beach, a stretch of sand that runs from Lennox Head north to Broken Head. You can also drive a 4WD along the northern end. There are plenty of lookouts where you can spot whales on their annual migration along the Australian coast between May and November. As the coastline in this region juts further out to the east, the whales can often be seen just off shore. Or take a whale-watching cruise with Out of the Blue Adventures to see them up close. Dolphins often join surfers riding the waves. Tea trees line Lake Ainsworth, which is a safe swimming area for kids and has excellent facilities for picnics and barbecues. You can kayak and SUP here, too. (The lake can be affected by blue green algae at times. Be sure to check to ensure it’s safe to take to the water.)
