This beautiful fishing village is a Nicaraguan gem, a magnet for surfers and sunbathers. At night, the beach still pulses with activity, thanks to a few popular beachfront bars and nightclubs. Surf clubs abound—catch a wave with an expert instructor if you’re a hang-ten rookie, trying to hang with the surfer big boys.

Sightseeing

Volcano Boarding isn't something for the faint-hearted. You will have to hike up Cerro Negro, which takes about an hour. Then the actual fun begins as you slide or surf down the 728-meter-high volcano in less than 5 minutes. And the speed, well that really depends on how fast you want to go! Cerro Negro is located near the city of Leon and is reached within a 50-minute drive. The 728-meter-high volcano is still active! Don't worry though, it hasn't erupted since 1999 and its activity is monitored regularly.

Founded in 1996, arguably one of the most important museums in Central America is the the Ortiz-Gurdián Foundation Art Museum. The museum is made up of several colonial buildings replete with ornate interior courtyards; one could just walk through and focus on the garden design and tile work alone in these areas! Much of the museum roof is open to the sky, and with the patina of the architectural space it is the opposite of the sanitized white cube galleries one often finds in North America. The museum showcases a vast collection: from early pre-Columbian, to Spanish colonial religious artifacts to modern and contemporary artworks.

Laguna de Apoyo is a clean, blue, and thermally vented 48-square km body of water contained inside the crater of the Apoyo Volcano. Laguna de Apoyo is one of Nicaragua’s most beautiful natural wonders (and a great place to vacation or backpack). For anyone traveling through Nicaragua it should not be missed!

Turtle Hatching Season is a must

For nearly 6 months out of the year (roughly from July to December), hundreds of thousands of rare sea turtles return to the same beach in which they were born to lay millions of eggs. There are other places in the world that bear witness to turtle hatching, but Nicaragua is one of only four countries where turtle hatchings occur on such a large scale.

First Aid

Hacienda Iguana now has it’s own First Response Center (Nica Heartbeat First Aid Center) located in the commercial center of Iguana just past Rios Market. The Nica Heartbeat First Aid Center is equipped to stabilize injuries, administer stitches, treat sting ray stings and other surf related injuries, prescribe basic meds, cleanse wounds, administer various medications via shot and provide basic medical attention. The First Aid Center is fueled by donations and open and available to the local Nicaraguan community, travelers and expats.

Do NOT pack a drone

It is illegal to bring drones into Nicaragua and if customs finds it they will hold it at the airport until you depart and charge a “storage fee” so we highly suggest not bringing your drone with you.

Surf Season

High surf season is considered April through September although you can still get great waves other times of the year!

Chargers

If you are coming from the US or Canada you will not need a voltage adapter. Nicaragua operates on 110 – Volts AC (60 – cycle) nationwide.

Groceries

I would recommend stopping in Rivas to pick up groceries in La Colonia or Maxi Pali supermarkets! You also have the option of buying groceries at the convenient store within the Hacienda Iguana community.
