one of two famous camelback trails. strenuous day hike within the city. very popular and very fun. great city views. there's a step smooth section with some handrails to get up which is a lot of fun. i enjoy hiking up the echo canyon side early in the morning (5 am) and then coming down the cholla trail side after summitting. this gives you maximum shade during your home. bring at least 2 liters of water and something with sodium and carbohydrates. hiking camelback unprepared can lead to heat stroke or death.

moderate day hike within the city. climb piestawa's steps to reach one of the highest city peaks. i enjoy doing this one later in the evening and coming down at night just before park closure. the parking gates are locked after close

stop by papago park for an early morning hike. enjoy the nearby lake and check out the botanical gardens or phoenix zoo. surprisingly you can see all of phoenix's major landmarks from this location. i joke that it's our "arch de triumph"

30 minutes east into mesa, the superstition mountains can be found along the apache trail near lost dutchman state park and tonto national forest. the superstition mountains live up to their name. the mountain hoodoos atop the crests are said to be our ancestors watching down over us. century old majestic saguaro cacti, unique to the sonoran region, tower over the landscape in dense formations. at night, the full moon casts forlorn shadows upon the craggy rock and wind whistles through cactus arms. if you're lucky, you'll hear the haunting bouts of coyote howls that seem to come from every direction. a mystic place, and truly one of my favorites. treasure loop itself is an easy, short hike with some altitude change and pleasant valley views. it is best attempted in the morning or at night on a full moon with a camping pass or on a full moon tour. from its highest points you will be able to see central phoenix and north phoenix, south and north mountain, piestawa, camelback, papago park, hayden butte (A mountain), ASU, tempe town lake, and four peaks. pretty neat. you can spend an entire day in this area. goldfield ghost town and mine has live western shoot off re-enactments (weekends only), bars, music and shops. a must see crowd pleaser in my view. you can continue onward on highway 88 to explore canyon lake, apache lake, weaver's needle, roosevelt lake, salt river tubing, or reavis falls.

aka "A mountain", this is a super duper short and easy hike that gives you nice views of ASU and downtown tempe. great little stop if you're planning on exploring mill ave. hike in the morning and then get brunch at daily jam, snooze, or first watch. explore the mill shops and then tour ASU. the Venus bus, a free circuit bus on the corner of University & Priest will take you almost straight to the trailhead. the main EB bus on University will also take you close but it is not free.

you can get lost in this massive mountain range. you'll likely have a chance to see coyotes, rattlesnakes, hawks, and other animals. the trail is highly trafficked and well marked so if you stick to main trails you won't get lost. parking is very limited at this trailhead.
