Paull is 2 miles from Hedon and is by the River Humber. It may not have a beach but it’s great for walks. Park up by the lighthouse and walk along the front. You’ll pass a Napoleonic fort and it’ll lead you to a wetlands reserve. To get to Paull carry on down Sheriff Highway and you’ll be there in a few minutes.

Eat and drink

Pubs we’d recommend: Shakespeare Inn: popular with locals, good food during the day, not far to walk. Head On Inn: small micro brewery Restaurants: Kolize restaurant: take away entrance at the front on St Augustine’s Gate but restaurant entrance is round the side past the Rolling Pin bakery There is also a good Greek restaurant called Olympus. Located in the corner of market place. Hedon Spice: Indian restaurant/ takeaway. Never had a bad meal. My no1 would be The Stag’s Head Inn in Lelley (10 minute drive/ 3 miles away): outstanding food in a lovely country pub. Kingstown Arms: close to Sainsbury’s supermarket on the way out of Hedon. Cheaper meals and a toddler soft play area attached.

Hull’s old town in the city centre is a great oldy worldy place to visit for food and drinks. I’d recommend The Lion and Key pub, Ye Old Black Boy pub, WM Hawkes pub and many more around Scale Lane. Brewdog, Head of Steam (dog friendly) and Furleys (dog friendly) are close by. Hull’s Fruit Market is full of independent shops, bars, restaurants and cafes. I’d recommend Minerva pub, Thieving Harry’s, Ambiente Tapas, Taphouse and Butler Whites for food. There’s something for everyone. Hitchcock’s vegetarian restaurant is fantastic- it’s bring your own and the puddings are huge. A short ride out of the city centre is Newland Avenue and Princes Avenue; great for cafes, restaurants and bars. Da Gianni (Italian) and Marrakech Ave (Moroccan) are excellent.

Sightseeing

Burton Constable Hall is an Elizabethan country house that is open to the public. The grounds are great to walk around, especially with dogs. I’d recommend the cafe too. Only 5 miles/ 10 minutes away.

The Deep aquarium is excellent and your tickets last the full year. It has over 3000 creatures including sharks, rays and penguins. The Street Life Museum is in Hull’s Old Town Museum Quarter and is free to visit. Experience 200 years of transport history as you walk down a 1940’s high street, board a tram or enjoy the pleasures of our carriage ride. Hull & East Riding Museum is opposite the Street Life Museum and worth a visit. The museum takes you through 235 million years of history. From a face-to-face encounter with a woolly mammoth to appreciating the beauty of the stunning mosaics within a Roman bathhouse, the museum displays show what it would have been like to live in the region throughout time. The Ferens Art Gallery off Queen Victoria Square is one of my favourite places. Free entry. East Park, off Holderness Road is Hull’s largest park (130 acres) and good for a walk around the lakes and the green spaces. The cafe is always popular. There is a small zoo also.

Spurn Point is Yorkshire's very own Lands End - an iconic and constantly moving peninsula which curves between the North Sea and the Humber Estuary. At over three miles long but as little as 50 metres wide, this landscape is unique and ever-changing. 16 miles/ 40 mins drive away from Hedon. Dogs are allowed in certain areas but not everywhere due to livestock grazing and birds.
