Food Scene

It's got decent food and a small bar. Sometimes they have trivia or live music of some kind. If you get a booth by the window you may see the train go by. It used to be an old train station that has been converted into a restaurant. The only restaurant in town. So funny story involved, feel free to ask about it when you get here. I am always happy to share... This place has ceased to exist and is presently for sale. This one horse town is now home to I think 0 restaurants... Which means the closest restaurant is a good 10 minutes away by car.

This place is amazing!!! Korean food done right. nums..... And then the chocolate lava cake for desert served with ice cream... I am allergic to dairy and I can't leave without that after my dinner. Allergy to dairy be damned. I recommend the beef bulgogi but there is no way to go wrong. The only thing about this place is it is a little drive about 20 minutes.

Finnegans, is a local bar. There is another one right next door at the Flat Penny. But Finnegans is also nice, it is the Irish scene. Though around here find me a place that isn't the Irish scene, this is Boston and and the surrounding area. The Greek festival in Central Square on Magazine street you say? Oh, shut up. That only runs a few days then it's gone again for a year, but it too is loads of fun. But yes, this area along with Boston, is known for it's Irish. And the wings at Finnegans and nachos, etc are not half bad.... I hear the booze is fabulous also. I warn you, they don't speak Irish. I tried once. Once I offered them Irish money for my drink.... No dice.

Nashoba Valley Winery, is lots of fun. In september, they offer apple picking in their orchard. They also have a massive selection of alcohol, a large portion of it cooked up at the winery. I got quite loaded there once, which I can truly say is not my habit. I am generally not a fan of the flavor of alcohol. But I had a great time tasting wines looking for one with a tolerable flavor and handing off my rejects to my Finnish husband to finish for me. My mother and I have also been to this winery together and enjoyed our visit.

This place is AMAZING! About 30 minutes drive from us. This is a historical place with a fun gift shop and a nice pond full of ducks. The best reason to go here is the bread they offer. I think they call them fritters or something. Little balls of New England style corn bread to be eaten with maple syrup as a pre dinner treat, or have them with butter or both. Just their standard pre meal dinner rolls are incredible also. Thinking about them may make me drool. I gotta stop writing about this place now...

This was the early home of Louisa May Alcott and her sister who became an artist living and traveling in Europe. Their father founded Fruitlands based on his wonderful philosophy, unfortunately living life in such an ideal way was too much for a bunch of city transplants and they nearly starved. Still it is a pretty place, and an interesting location to visit if you like literature and history.

I love Newburyport. It is about an hour and 10 minutes from here, by the Merrimack river and the Atlantic Ocean. It is really an adorable area with beaches up on Plum Island. Plum Island, is a barrier reef not an island at all. Every year the big storms that hit our coast line carry away one of it's ocean side mansions with the tide. Lot's of beach, and cutesy shops and old sea captainy houses with widow's walk, it really is a lovely north shore area.

Worcester, is an interesting city about 15-20 minutes from us. At one time it was a beautiful thriving secondary city just under an hour to Boston... It has gone down hill. Though this is where you would catch a concert and do many other things, just avoid the DMV in this city the place is scary. Lots of restaurants and an amazing medical center left over from the city's glory days.... Lots of homeless people.... Drug addicts... As a woman I avoid it if I am by myself.

Lizzie Borden, took an axe. She gave her mother 40 whacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her father 41. Or so the old rhyme goes.... A more macabre part of our history... Evidently, in a very old house where everything could be heard everywhere as is typical of houses from the era, Lizzie's parents were killed right above her head in a gruesome execution that involved many whacks with an axe. The bodies hit the floor, but Lizzie, claimed she heard nothing. She claimed she didn't do it and that she had no idea what was happening at the time. She is the historical OJ of Boston.

Dogtown, is an old local ghost town. There are a lot of boulders with life lessons. I have always wanted to go see this place. The town was founded in large part by wives and widows of seafaring men. The sight of the town was chosen for it's distance from the ocean. Called Dogtown, because of the dogs these women kept for protection. By 1840, no one remained in the town and it was a ghost town.

File this under D for Demented.... A hand dug cave, dug by a man directed by ghosts in search of pirate treasure... Lynn, is close to Salem. It is kind of a scary neighborhood. Don't be alone there at night. As the old rhyme goes.... Lynn Lynn city of sin, you never go out the way you came in.

Actually, I go out here almost yearly.... I take my dad's 17 footer, leave from Brewster Cape Cod, and head out across the water towards Welfleet. Billingsgate, used to be a town. A town that was plagued by the pest of pirates among other things. Today, it is home to nothing but old ruins, old foundations of where buildings used to be. Billingsgate, is a true Atlantis. The sea ate it up. No no one lives there but the seals. You leave on the boat at low tide and come back later in the day. This is a great place to watch and get close to seals. I warn you, they are NOT tame seals. DO NOT try to swim with them. DO NOT try to touch them. Give them a respectful space and enjoy watching them.

This is a great place! There is a lot of history here it was the poet Longfellow's favorite place. It is also one of mine. As a little girl my dad used to take us to the old mill and it's streams and he would send us in telling us to "look for the silver!" I am ashamed to say at about 6 years old we would steal people's wishes to buy candy cuz my dad was too cheap to buy it for us.... Lot's of nature beautiful and scenic near an amazing old fashioned candy store. Yes it is still there even after all these years. New England is slow when it comes to change. Which is not always a bad thing.

Plum Island, is not an Island. It is a barrier reef, that is connected up to Newburyport with a long road. It is kind of like a poor man's cape cod. Some American presidents have vacationed there. Full of tiny little houses and cottages, the real entertainment comes when we have one of our massive New England storms and a sea side mansion falls into the ocean and floats away with the tide. Pieces of Plum Island, have been getting reclaimed by the sea since... Forever. The beach is also nice so long as you avoid green head season and don't piss off the precious plovers. Because what would we all do if the plovers got mad??? The horror! It is also good for seal watching and whale watches.

You can walk around the pond, and you can swim in it. It is a really good time. It was the special place of Thoreau the writer. A little known fact, Emerson, loved to take other people's ideas and pass them off as his own. He destroyed his philosopher wife Lydian this way, and harvested many ideas from their close family friend Thoreau. The Thoreaus were known for their hatred of slavery and their belief all people should be equal. And their position I can agree with completely.

Drumlin Farm, was one of my favorite places as a child. I grew up going there. It is the reason Wildflower Farm exists today. It is where I first learned to love barn yard animals and where this dream began. It is much larger than Wildflower, perhaps even better. It will always be a part of who I am and I am to this day grateful for every visit I ever got to make to this place. It's where I first saw and learned how milk comes from cows, and how adorable baby pigs are. It's where I learned to love the smell of farms and fresh hay.

One of if not the greatest aquarium in the world. My family has always loved the ocean. As a child my father taught me to track the ocean floor like a hunter when the tide goes out. We were forever going here once again due to free tickets that he got from work so he could save to retire at 50. And also, because it was amazing, so much to learn about the ocean. It prepared me for later in life when I go to go scuba diving on a corral reef in Jamaica, in my mid teens. This truly is a special place. One of the first dates my husband took me on was here. I love the aquarium.

Maplewood farm right here in Berlin, is wonderful if you want to go horseback riding. They have both lesson ponies and privately owned boarded horses like my guy, Pete. The facility is very nice and includes an indoor ring. Lessons are available.
Pick your own berries, buy your own christmas ornaments made from things found in nature, some produce available etc.... The family that runs it has been in this town for generations. The folks running it now, are loads of fun and super nice. Sometimes, at Christmas time they offer in the town center hay rides. They were some of the first people we met when we moved here. They are still where we go for our christmas tree every year and decorations of various kinds. Indian Head Farm, has recently changed it's name. Due to I think being a place run by good people who have up till now used an archaic historical farm name for historic reasons. Today, my guess is, out of care for the native peoples of the USA and human decency which they possess in spades, they have selected to call it Cordelia's Farm, and honor a historic women from town and from their family. Cuz times have changed, and we must change with time to become a better version of ourselves. And so they have.

19 Carter, is our local community center. You can find coffee, or a sandwhich there. You can look at the schedule there are all kinds of things going on. The hub of Berlin local drama, and a place many spend their time. Often inhabited by the elderly seeking help with technology from a local 10 year old.... Knitting groups.... There may be a meeting of tea addicts anonymous I really have no idea. I don't get down there often enough. It's in an old church the historical society has been in the process of fixing for.... Longer than it took Romney, to get the big dig finished. So think a generation... Maybe 3. There are also sometimes children's groups and play time stuff here too.

Our location is interesting because it is very rural, and yet we are a 10 minute drive to the mall. Which includes a Macy's and a movie theater, some more food options, and plenty more.

I don't know where to start, this is one of my favorite places in the world. Brewster, is where I grew up most summers as a kid. I would spend my days at the beach and on the sand flats, or with my boat a rubber raft I called Mr. Stinky Sinky, (it was full of holes.) Still, I would fill him up with air and go out with him in the ocean or at the mill ponds. I used that boat to prank many an unsuspecting uncle and family friend. So many memories and good times here.

Another one that is special, when I was a teenager, we lived in an 1850s farm house in Lexington. But families fall apart, mine did. Don't feel bad it was for the best. We are all happier now. But this was my teenage home. My dad is still there and he runs his zen group out of there now when he isn't in Rhode Island at PZC.

Balance Rock, is another family owned farm with many generations of farmers in a long line. Today, it is run by a great guy named Buddy Wheeler. He is I do believe the 6th generation. They have meat and eggs, and chicken and hay and barn yard animal feed, and honey and local maple syrup etc.... My favorite thing here is the bacon. But we also often buy our goat and chicken feed here as well. When some bunnies were left here, it was Buddy, who built us a hutch for them. He is one of the people I go to for farming advice quite regularly as farming is new to me. They also offer the best fresh unfrozen thanksgiving turkeys.

A really quintessential and disgustingly alarmingly, over priced neighborhood in Boston. Yes, there really is an annoying hill to walk up.

Follow the drinking gourd and wade in the water children, all the way to this place. It was a stop on the underground railroad. It provides some evidence of how escaped slaves were hidden on their way out of slavery. I have a great deal of pride knowing, that helping people escape from brutality is part of the history of the region I call home. My grandma used to bring me here as a little girl... To show me these historical truths, so that when I see injustice, I will like the people who once lived in this house, take a stand. And so I do. The lessons here are many... And it poses one of the most important questions each one of us will ever ask ourselves, the question, who do I want to be?

Sturbridge Village, is very cool. About a 45 minute to an hour drive from us. It is home to a collection of historic houses and buildings, a museum of sorts on early American living. I always enjoyed my visits there. In fact, The Wildflower Farmhouse was built to be a replica of the famous Sturbridge Village Parsonage. Today in Sturbridge it is painted white while our home remains in the original color it was painted when first constructed, an antique barn red.

One of the coolest museums around for the science nerds. My husband, a PhD in physics thinks the world of it. It is wonderful for children and people of all ages. This is another place I spent a lot of time as a kid with my dad. (because, he had free tickets courtesy of where he worked.) So we could go there and he could still save to retire at 50. They have an Omni theater that is almost always showing something cool.

Harvard, is the most famous and first university in the country. It sits in a very fun area of cambridge known as Harvard square, unless you are from Boston. Then you likely know it better as haaavaaad Squaya. Go look at all the weird teenagers in the pit pretending to be hard core subculture and all bad ass. Or go to The Garage, or just walk around. At night once it gets warm there's all kinds of performing artists out on the streets. There are also loads of restaurants, and many things to see in and around Harvard University.

This is a fun area full of history and paganism today historically there was likely little to none. It is all about the horrible witch trials in which over 20 people were killed as witches. Little girls with imaginary evidence.... It was an ugly time for sure. There are loads of museums on the history as well as the modern religion of witchcraft, tons of restaurants and shops in the area. It has gotten a lot nicer since I lived there at 19 and worked in the museums as a tour guide. There is a large green, and the willows in the summer.... It is also home to a university with what at least used to have an awesome drama department.

This is another location associated with Louisa May Alcott the writer of Little Women. After her father's settlement and philosophy experiment of Fruitlands in the town of Harvard failed, and the family almost starved to death, they moved to Concord. Not far from Bush, the home of Emerson. Emerson started a slightly less hard core settlement in Concord. This became their family homestead in Concord.
