Spiaggia di Planargia
An enchanted landscape: the sound of the surf, the breeze that expands the Mediterranean scents, the shades of the sea, a place of rare beauty that is almost never crowded. Wild and persuasive, isolated but welcoming, between jagged rocks, with pinnacles that look like towers, here is the beach of Su Sirboni. It is a strip of fine white sand, set in a cove hidden among red porphyry, dotted with the bungalows of an old resort, abandoned for decades and now incorporated into the local nature. Its name means 'the wild boar' but it is also known as Cala Francese: it shines on the southern coast of Ogliastra, in the territory of Gairo sant'Elena. You will reach it by exiting the 'old' state road 125 in Cardedu and from the town you will proceed for eight kilometers, first towards the Cardedu marina, then towards Perd'e Pera. On Sirboni it must be sought and desired. From the parking lot on the street you will take a path of approximately 300 meters. The entrance door is an opening created in the thick vegetation. A few steps, then down to the rocks. A 15-minute walk awaits you - inevitable photographic shots included - among schists and strawberry trees, rough and angular rocks, round and smooth boulders. The goal is a 200-meter long arc of light sand, soft and soft like talcum powder, 'unexpected' in a stretch of coast that is almost entirely pebbly. Behind it, small dunes and Mediterranean greenery embellish the bay. The seabed is shallow for tens of meters, the water is crystal clear and bright blue and turquoise in color, ideal for snorkeling and underwater fishing. A pearl as bright as it is wild, which would probably be the most beautiful beach of any other Italian region, yet it is little known. You will find little crowding even in high season, perhaps because the relative effort of the itinerary getting there is a little daunting. No bathing establishments, no sun lounger rentals, no bars, just the 'skeleton' of the abandoned resort. Then bring everything you need to drink, eat and explore, including a mask, fins and rock shoes. And it is advisable to stay there until sunset, when the sunlight paints the surrounding rocks a thousand shades of red, a magic in the magic that will leave you with an even more special memory and the desire to return as soon as possible. Together with su Sirboni, the marina of Gairo offers another spectacle, different but equally suggestive, Coccorrocci: four kilometers of porphyritic pebbles, round, smooth and shiny, shaped by time. Sea snails live there, which give their name to the beach, the largest on the island among those entirely made of pebbles. The context is suggestive: the dark pebbles combine with the blue hues of the sea, while red porphyry rocks loom around and junipers frame the green and inebriate the beach with scents. The place is ideal for trekking: twenty minutes walk from the beach you will find the natural pools fed by the source on Accu 'and axina In the marina there is also the Lispedda beach, called' the little beach ', divided in two by rocks and gravel and pebbles. From the sea, the territory of Gairo reaches as far as Gennargentu. Other landscapes not to be missed are the Taquisara cave, in Mount Ferru, and the imposing Perda 'e Liana, the peak of the Ogliastra heels (1300 meters), a' protected 'natural monument, populated by mouflons and flown over by the bearded vulture.

The natural pools of Coccorrocci or Monte Ferru are located within the territory of Gairo, a town in Ogliastra, and are also simply called Is Piscinas due to the presence of a series of small pools along the path of the river that feeds them. They include a series of small jumps with small waterfalls and lakes, which give rise to real small pools that are beautiful to see but also very important as regards the fauna that populates them. Specifically, in fact, in the Is Piscinas natural pools we can find an entirely Sardinian rarity, that is the Sardinian newt, one of the rarest species of amphibians in all of Europe. The stream that feeds is piscinas di Coccorrocci, with clear and transparent waters, originates from the source of su Accu and axina, of Monte Ferru. This place is dominated by unspoiled nature, by the presence of dense vegetation, made mostly of Mediterranean scrub. Along the path that will lead you to the pools, it is not uncommon to meet beautiful specimens of cattle and other animals.

You will arrive in Santa Maria Navarrese enchanted by the romantic streets close to the coast, bordered by the turquoise of the water, between benches that invite you to contemplate and white sails that stand out against the sea. The church of Santa Maria di Navarra, dating back to the eleventh century, and the Spanish tower, built in the seventeenth century to guard the coasts, represent the historical memory of the country. From the terrace overlooking the gulf, in the shade of the pine trees, dominated by the tower, let yourself be enchanted by the view overlooking the marina. Legend attributes the name of the ancient church to the princess of Navarre who ordered its construction to express gratitude to the Virgin Mary. Among the most beautiful places in its vicinity we recommend Cala Sisine, pearl of the Gulf of Orosei, with its beach with large grains flanked by two imposing rock ridges, but also Cala Mariolu, with a shallow seabed, Cala Follò, Cala Goloritzè, which joins the turquoise of its waters to the white beach, and Cala Luna, considered among the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. The Mediterranean scrub, grouped in a thick wood of centuries-old holm oaks, junipers and pines, overlooks the decisive brushstrokes of the sea. The mouflon, the queen's falcon, the golden eagle and the Corsican seagull have chosen this wild and harsh place to keep the species going. In the surroundings, the unparalleled beauty of the wild territory of Baunei: limestone ramparts overlooking the sea, marine expanses of unspeakable splendor, green waters like fresh shoots and blue as if they could not be distinguished from the sky, make this place an unmissable journey to make.

La Stazione dell'Arte is a very small contemporary art museum dedicated to the work of Maria Lai. Inaugurated in 2006, following a donation by the artist of a corpus of over one hundred and forty works, the museum is located in the premises of the former railway station, located downstream of the town. The choice of the place lends itself well to communicating one of the most cherished intentions of the artist's work, namely that of bringing art to people. The station, in fact, commonly perceived as a place of departures and arrivals, of encounters, of human relationships that meet and separate, becomes the ideal setting in which to host the works that Maria Lai bequeathed to her hometown. .

You think of Ogliastra and you are reminded of the traditions, the longevity, the flavors of the typical products, the taste of its cuisine, and perhaps more than anything else the breathtaking natural scenery. On the border with the Barbagie, in the territory of Villagrande Strisaili, an oak forest guards one of its gems: the natural pools of Bau Mela. You will admire an oasis where the current of the homonymous watercourse has carved and shaped the granite, through two waterfalls in rapid succession it generates a fascinating series of jumps and lakes. The first waterfall, more impressive, creates the largest pool, while the second is divided into other equally accessible pools, where you can immerse yourself in crystal clear water surrounded by mighty granite walls. The panorama you will observe along the way to reach the natural masterpiece is no less magical: lush Mediterranean scrub, centuries-old junipers and expanses of asphodels will accompany you on a journey through wild and unspoiled landscapes. The importance of this water resource is also given by the presence of a dam and a hydroelectric power plant, visible along the way, which are part of a water management system in the area that takes the name of the upper Flumendosa plant and includes also the nearby dams of Bau Mandara and Bau Muggeris. In the surroundings, you will also find other places to explore: an evocative path - accompanied by tables for rest and picnics - leads to the majestic Sothai waterfall, which flows into the Bau Vigo canyon. In the territory of the nearby hamlet of Villanova Strisaili, at about 700 meters high, there is the gorge of Pirincanes, carved by the Rio 'e Forru where the water eroding the pink granite has shaped a series of natural pools, called' potholes of the giants'. The natural beauties did not leave even the Ogliastra ancestors insensitive, it is no coincidence that it is an area rich in archaeological remains: the park of Santa Barbara hosts seven Giants' tombs and one megalithic, 17 nuraghi and ten nuragic villages. The surroundings of Villanova Strisaili offer other sites: s'Arcu and is Forros, where it is possible to admire a temple with megaron and two wells, various domus de Janas, the complex of Troculu - with two nuraghi, village and tomb of giants - and the archaeological area of sa Carcaredda. Villagrande Strisaili is the town of centenarians par excellence, the custodian of ancient traditions that have been handed down unchanged for centuries, which can be found in the celebrations of festivals, such as the feast of San Sebastian, in craftsmanship and traditional cuisine.
