The temple of the sun was one of the most sacred and important constructions of the Inca empire, it’s imposing carved stones are just another great example of the architectural and engineering skills they mastered throughout time. Back in the day the temple was mainly used as an important religious and political center, where people gathered around to worship various of their gods including the sun, the moon and the stars; historians said that the walls of the shrines were covered with plates of gold, silver and precious stones. During the Spanish conquest the temple was looted and destroyed, shortly after it was gifted by the conqueror’s brother to the Order of the Dominics whom built the Church and Convent of Santo Domingo over the ruins of the former temple. Nowadays there’s also a museum where pieces of colonial and contemporary art are exhibited as well as liturgical objects and clothing of the time.

It’s a religious temple from the colonial era famous for its baroque style architecture; belongs to the Order of Mercedarians and the construction began back in 1535, but due to earthquakes it had to be rebuilt in several occasions. Inside the cloisters of the temple important pieces of art from the ‘Escuela Cusqueña’ are exhibited, as well as colonial furniture, chandeliers and other valuable objects from the time; but its greatest relic is the Custody of La Merced, a jewel that measures 4”10ft and weighs 48lb, this piece is adorned with precious stones such as gold, diamonds, rubies, emeralds and pearls.

It’s a block of green diorite stone that is embodded in one of the walls of what is believed to have been the palace of Inca Roca located on Hatun Rumiyoc street. What makes this stone so special is its 500-year-old age and its 12 angles with clearly defined finishes that fit perfectly with the other surroundings stones; this is another clear example of the architectural knowledge that the Incas had back in their time.

Known as The Abode of the Gods, this modern attraction keeps the ancient tradition of stone carving alive with impressive 16ft sculptures that represents the Pachamama and Andean inka worldview. Cusquenian artist Michel de Titan Monteagudo started this project back in 2017 and he’s currently adding new sculptures on the site. Definitely an ideal plan to enjoy with family while you take a lot of pictures and enjoy a great view.
