AMAZZZZING fresh barbacoa tacos, as seen on Netflix' the Taco Chronicles. a MUST VISIT. Only open on weekends and the barbacoa sells out fast, so get their early (by 10 or 11AM). The barbacoa, consome, pulque... everything is delicious and it's a very fun and unique cultural experience.

The local university, Chapingo, hosts an organic products street market every weekend.. great place to find local products, yummy food (groceries or food vendors if you want to grab a bite while you are there). Often I find products here that I can't find in other parts of Estado de Mexico (like kamboocha and kefir, cage-free eggs and goat's milk), also great shopping for gifts / souvenirs while supporting local makers.

Neighborhoods

Coatlinchan is about a 10 minute drive from Lomas de Cristo. There's a cute town square, a beautiful catholic church (one of the oldest in all of Mexico) and lots of local ice cream shops.

Pulque is a pre-Hispanic beverage with a consistency reminiscent of kombucha, if kombucha were made from okra. It's about as alcoholic as beer, but it's made from the lightly fermented sap of the agave—the same plant that's used to make tequila and mezcal. Coatepec is known for it's pulque and is definitely worth a visit if you are into trying the local's favorite alcohols beverage.

Unique historic ruins... a great little hike around Aztec King Nezahualcoyotls vacation home from the 1400s, with cool views of Texcoco. This hidden gem has hardly any crowds, free entry and is open 24 hours (though I don't recommend going at night, especially if you are alone). The main access is from a street called Nezahualpilli, there are a couple of parking lots that charge 40 mxn per car and 20 mxn for bikes, unlimited time. The roads to reach the point are in great condition, the whole town of San Nicolas Tlaminca is very clean and has stone/concrete streets. Local university highly esteemed for its agricultural research, historic buildings with some of Diego Riviera's first murals. Entrance is free. The guards may ask to keep your ID while you are on the grounds, but they will return it when you leave. Nice safe green place to walk around.

The entrance of Monte Tlaloc National Park is about 20 minutes from the QSCC and is known for great mountain biking, hiking and scenic views. At the top of Tlaloc you can find the ruins of an ancient temple, said to be at the highest altitude of any temple ruins in Latin America. This area is also known for very good views of most of the highest peaks and volcanoes in central Mexico, has places t camp, hike, boulder and sport climb.

Want to get a facial or massage while you are in town (and do so at an affordable price?). Magnificent Spa has great staff, they speak English, and have very clean, professional spaces with a variety of services.

Kaoly Spa is run by the sweetest team of women- great massages, and they offer the "fish pedicure" experience which is fun. Very affordable and only 10 minutes away from the QCSS. Kaoly Spa does not have a great online presence and I never would have found this place with out a local recommendation. The owners are two amazing, very kind women. Prices are very reasonable.
