On the road between Kotor and Lovćen National Park you’ll drive through Njeguši, an unassuming village that would be easy to just drive through and never think of again. But this little village was once the historical powerhouse of old Montenegro. Montenegro used to be much smaller than it is now. As recently as the 19th century it was just an unrecognised territory that was officially claimed by the Ottoman Turks and dependent on Russia for money. This state was ruled by the vladika, the prince bishop and the serdar, who was responsible for defence. Both of these positions were passed down family lines in clans based in Njeguši, making Njeguši an important place in Montenegro. Today, this village of just 35 permanent residents is a popular stop for tours travelling to Lovćen National Park from Kotor. It’s a great place to stop and sample some of Montenegro’s traditional cuisine, visit Montenegro’s oldest restaurant and see a traditional 19th century house that was home to one of Montenegro’s most powerful clans. You can easily include Njeguši in a day trip itinerary or visit it on tour. So don’t just drive through Njeguši, stop and experience old world Montenegro!

Our Lady of the Rocks, is one of the two islets off the coast of Perast in the Bay of Kotor, Montenegro. It is an artificial island created by bulwark of rocks and by sinking old and seized ships loaded with rocks. The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Rocks is the largest building on the islet; it has a museum attached. There is also a small gift shop close to the church and a navigation light at the western end of the islet. According to legend, the islet was made over the centuries by local seamen who kept an ancient oath after finding the icon of Madonna and Child on the rock in the sea on 22 July 1452. Upon returning from each successful voyage, they laid a rock in the Bay. Over time, the islet gradually emerged from the sea. The custom of throwing rocks into the sea is alive even nowadays. Every year on the sunset of 22 July, an event called fašinada in the local dialect, when local residents take their boats and throw rocks into the sea, widening the surface of the island, takes place. The church was renovated in 1722. The church contains 68 paintings by Tripo Kokolja, a famous 17th-century baroque artist from Perast.

During the visit to Kotor you should by all means visit the fortress St. John (Sveti Ivan). It is situated above the city walls of the Kotor’s Old town. Climbing up to the fortress St. John, or San Giovanni as people from Kotor like to call it, starts with the serpentines from the east part of the Kotor old Town, which go to the very top of the fortress on 280m above sea level. Before you set yourself to climb towards the fortress we suggest that you take your camera with yourself, because the pictures of Kotor old town and Kotor bay which you will see can not be described in words, but instead they have to be first, experienced, and then pictured. While you are climbing you can enjoy the sights of the Old town of Kotor. Another reason because of which you have to visit fortress San Giovanni is the fantastic view of the entire Kotor bay. The pictures of the Kotor harbor will also remain in your memory, which during the summer is usually filled with luxurious boats, yachts, sail boats etc. Beside the serpentines by which you reach the San Giovanni fortress, there are few resting places for those who are not in a good shape. A special indulgence will be the visit to the fortress during the hot summer days. However, city walls are illuminated with special lights during night which will make the visit of the San Giovanni fortress, and Kotor much more interesting to the guests and tourists.

The Blue Cave in Montenegro is one of the must-see attractions while you’re on the coast. It never fails to impress! The Blue Cave is the largest of many sea caves on Luštica Peninsula. It’s called the Blue Cave because the way the light hits the sandy bottom and reflects up through the water makes the whole cave look blue. It’s very beautiful and it’s a lucky quirk because almost all of the coast here is rocky, not sandy. You can see the blue light shining out of the cave when you approach, but to really see it you’ve got to go inside and get underwater.

The Petar II Petrović Njegoš Mausoleum on Mt Lovćen is an important landmark in Montenegro. It’s a dedication to one of Montenegro’s greatest sons, a teenager who found himself in charge of an unrecognised country of feuding tribes surrounded by powerful armies. Njegoš used courage and cunning to unify and defend Montenegro, while also writing several books of epic poetry. It’s fitting then, that Petar II Petrović Njegoš should be honoured with this impressive mausoleum on a beautiful mountaintop. The Petar II Petrović Njegoš Mausoleum is a popular attraction and a must-see in Lovćen National Park.
