Russell Lakes, about a 20 minute drive from the ranch, is a large wetland preserve that is one of the best birdwatching sites in the Valley. Especially in the spring and fall, one can see a variety of waterfowl, shorebirds, and other species making a stopover in the Valley during their migration.

Penitente Canyon, to the south-west of the ranch at the foot of the San Juan range, is one of our favorite place in the Valley. Whether it's the spectacular volcanic landscape, the petroglyphs, or the world-class rock climbing, mountain biking, and hiking, it's worth a visit!

City/town information
Salida, on the banks of the Arkansas River and about a 45 minute drive from the ranch, is a great Colorado mountain town worth a visit. It's got great restaurants, breweries, and shops, not to mention a wealth of outdoor activities! The Arkansas River runs right through downtown, with a great whitewater park open to the public for swimming and rafting. Look into some of the local guide services for a rafting experience. Salida also has big box stores and larger grocery chains.

Del Norte is a a great little town on the Rio Grande in the Southwestern part of the Valley. Walk along the river, get pizza and beer at Three Barrel Brewing, or shop at the General Specific! Definitely worth a visit!
